Amazing Value!Dec 19, 2011
By Jeremy Storly I inherited one of these filters used from a friend, and I have been using it nonstop ever since. I run some more expensive filters on my other tanks, such as the Fluval 306 canister filter, Marineland Penguin series, Tetra Whisper and Penn-Plax Cascade. I can honestly say that this Aqueon filter is one of the best filters I have, and if I ever have to replace one of my other HOB filters, there is a good chance I would get one of the Aqueon filters to do so.
Let us first make clear that any HOB filter will require a minor investment in filter cartridges. I have run this particular filter on a tank with gouramis, and currently on a tank with neon tetras and albino corys. How do I make my cartridges last so long? Well, I have one of these attached to the intake: Pre-Filter Sponge 3 Pack for Fluval Edge Aquarium This prevents too much debris from being sucked into the filter while increasing the biological filtration, the most important stage in filtration, as any good aquariust knows. These Fluval sponges fit perfectly and in no way inhibit the flow. They have saved me a lot of money on cartridges, and when they get dirty, I just rinse them in some aquarium water and put them back on. My flower shrimp also love to eat particles of food from the sponge!
As for being quiet, mine runs silently. I never hear this filter running. If you get one that makes a lot of noise, please see about getting a replacement as I have never had this problem, and as I said, this is a pre-owned filter.
As for being reliable, because of its design, this filter starts right up after a power outage or water change. No priming for this filter! This is the main reason that I would replace one of my other HOB filters with one of these. The Marineland filters require priming, the Tetra Whisper filters are meant to be self-priming, but can be somewhat unreliable. My Aqueon filter has always started up again after being turned off. This is great peace of mind, especially when I am away from home for a few days.
As for being effective, this filter holds its own against its competitors. True, it is not an Aquaclear, but it is just as good as any filter using a standard carbon cartridge. Its bio-filtration may not be the best, but this only becomes an issue when you have to replace the cartridge, and if you are using a sponge pre-filter as I recommend above, you should not have a problem with your tank cycling after a cartridge change.
Now, let me make a few points:
1. This particular filter should NOT be used for goldfish. This model is designed for ten gallons or less, and a ten gallon tank is not appropriate for a goldfish. Besides, goldies create so much waste that they require at least TWICE the recommended filtration. For example, on my 75 gallon goldfish tank, I run a canister recommended for 70 gallons, a HOB recommended for 70 gallons, and 2 Hydro Sponge filters recommended for 40 gallons each. Over-filtration? Maybe, but goldies don't mind the current, and it keeps my water clean. In addition, even the smallest goldfish will grow too large for a ten gallon tank, and if the fish itself doesn't grow, its organs will, and it will eventually die a painful death. I did once put a small common goldfish into a ten gallon hospital tank temporarily, but I did so with plenty of filtration. This Aqueon QuietFlow 10 is not enough for any kind of goldfish in any tank whatsoever.
2. This filter should NOT, in my opinion, be used for any Betta. It doesn't create a super-strong current, but it is still too strong for a fish who prefers still water. I have found that a Hydro Sponge filter powered by an air pump is all you need to filter a tank for one Betta. I have a male crowntail Betta in a ten gallon tank, and I do just this. I also have a female Betta in a five gallon tank, and I use a Whisper internal filter set on its lowest setting, and this seems to work as well. The Aqueon filter is NOT appropriate for a Betta.
3. If you overload your tank, you need more filtration, and you will have to change your cartridge more. Research and learn what kind and how many fish can go into a ten gallon tank, and don't exceed this amount. It's a bad idea for everyone involved, especially the fish.
In conclusion, this filter is economical, silent, reliable, and well-designed. It suffers only from a somewhat inferior system for bio-filtration which can easily be remedied by the addition of an inexpensive sponge pre-filter. This would be a great filter for beginners because of its simple design, and also a great choice for those of us with more experience who are on a budget or for whom it is impractical to run a canister filter.

Quiet, works great with crystal-clear waterDec 20, 2011
By Andrew Cuga I have this filter running in a 10 gallon guppy community tank and the water couldn't be more clear, now that the tank is established after a few months.
The filter cartridge will get a little clogged up, which is mostly my fault from overfeeding my fish. This is easy to fix-- just run the filter media under tap water until its cleaned out, then put it back in. I check it and do this once a week, if needed. Other than that, I just change the filter media every 4-6 weeks.
And it's very quiet, especially if the water level in the aquarium is maintained. I can barely hear it, and it's definitely a *lot* quieter than my Tetra Whisper Air Pump http://www.amazon.com/Tetra-77851-Whisper-Pump-10-Gallon/dp/B0009YJ4N6, which is supposed to be 'silent'.

actually a good filterMay 30, 2011
By littlemiss I've had many tanks with many different filters and this one is so far the best. contrary to other reviews i can testify to the fact that this is a quiet filter the only thing i hear at night is the water flowing out which is actually rather peaceful, especially because i have a tank 10 gal. in my bedroom and i am a VERY light sleeper. I also purchased this brand of filter for a 50 gallon tank which i keep my (old/humongous) gold fish in and it performs beautifully. However, the carbon cartridge does need to be changed monthly for all my tanks which isn't that expensive considering other options. Also.... it isn't too powerful for a betta i have another planted 10 gal. tank that i keep a male betta in and he does not struggle against the current AND he can still build his bubble nest :)

Works Well... but uses up filter cartridges fast!!Sep 26, 2009

First let me say that I own this Aqueon filter and another model of theirs, the Power Filter 20.
I had this filter installed on a 10 gallon tank and I had no complaints on its actual performance. The water in the tank stayed clean and clear, without alot of fuss and bother on my part. Aside from having to clean the end of the water pickup tube from time to time and changing the filter cartridges - an easy task of removing the filter lid, pulling out the old one, inserting the new one and replacing the lid - this filter was very close to maintenance free. I find, on the whole, that Aqueon products are well made and last.
My one BIG complaint with this filter is that the filter cartridges don't last long before they need to be replaced. The Power Filter 20 (installed on a 20 gallon tank) uses up one cartridge in about 3 - 4 weeks. This Power Filter 10 goes through a cartrdge in about 1 week! When I saw how fast this was happening, I really started to monitor how much I was feeding, how often I vacuumed the tank bottom, etc. Still, the filter continued to go through cartridges, becoming much more expensive to operate then the Power Filter 20 model (Although the the Power Filter 10 and its cartridges are cheaper then the Power Filter 20, it will actually cost you more to use after a couple months of having to change the cartridges so often).
I have since switched this filter out for a Power Filter 20 and actually get 4+ weeks out of the cartrdges with that filter - works great too.
If you are looking for a good filter system for your 10 gallon tank, I suggest skipping this model and getting the Power Filter 20 instead.

Great Filter for a 10 gallon tankOct 16, 2010

My 10 gallon tank had sea horses in it and because of that, the tank can certainly get filthy in a hurry. Since I never had Sea Horses, I didn't think to buy the clean team which includes: snails, crabs, and a starfish. From what I read, hermit crabs with pinchers will attack the sea horses. The Sea Horses, which are beautiful creatures are also deliberately slow eaters. Uneaten food will sit for a very long time. My water got cloudy very quickly and I found that I had to change the water a lot but this didn't do much good. I felt like I had to get a really powerful filter usually reserved for a 45 gallon tank. I orginally had a whisper filter that seemed like it didn't work. To top it off, the filter's motor burnt out. I was without a filter and didn't know what to do.
I went to my pet shop and this filter was recommend. What a difference! Within an hour, the water was so clear, it seemed like it was filtered water with no one in it. I was amazed. Even with Sea Horses, this filter was able to keep up and do the job. The filter uses a pad and has a biological filtration area (there is no need to add any biological agent at all, the filter "creates it." You can add some to help speed things along. The filter pad is inexpensive. I bought a 3-pack. The one knock is that it creates a strong stream that will send weak fish flying ie Sea Horses and if you have plants, be sure to dig them in deep; they might get unhinged. I had a item in the tank that the sea horses can latch on but, sometimes, it was leaning because of the filter stream. I moved it to the other side and there were no issues. Funny how one of my Sea Horses loved to go though the current, he seemed to purposely swim near the filter current, get swept away, and come back. Also, if your tank is not filled high enough, the current (out take) will "dig" a hole in your sand/gravel. Other than that, this is a terrific filter. All of the "issues" are hardly anything to cause you to overlook this filter. This filter does its job and does it well! Keep in mind; sea horses are very messy eaters and slow to eat. About half of their food accumulates on the bottom of the tank. The water eventually gets cloudy but when I had this filter; the water NEVER was/got cloudy! Cleaning the filter was a cinch. Removing the filter pad and replacing them was a cinch also. The filter pads are very inexpensive. The filter is very quiet. If yours is loud, your could of assembled it wrong or got a defective one.
* I recommened this filter for my wife's cousin who has a tropical fish tank (a beta, pleco, catfish, and a few goldfish). She loves the filter and hasn't lost any fish at all***
