5Excellent small animal fountainOct 21, 2009
By Fishing Fool
I ordered this fountain from KV Vet Supplies through Amazon and received it less than a week later. Unfortunately, the piece that holds the pump in place had broken off during shipping. I called KV Vet on Saturday, Oct. 17, and received the replacement on Wednesday, Oct. 21. I have to say that the customer service at KV Vet is outstanding!
Now, about the fountain itself -
What I really like about it is that it is a three tiered water container. The area where the water is pumped up serves as the first bowl. It then flows over to the small bowl a little bit lower than that and finally ends up flowing into the lowest bowl (which is also the largest). So if debris or fur gets into the water, it settles in the lowest bowl and there are still two areas with clean, flowing water.

This fountain is also very quiet, but has a good flow of water. It's replacing a Petmate fountain that is still in working condition but has a lower flow rate and only one very shallow bowl. This fountain also holds considerable more water than the Petmate.

I would definitely recommend this bowl, especially with a reasonable price like it has.

5Quiet and Cat Approved DesignJan 12, 2010
By Jon Benignus
Our new Cat Mate Pet Fountain is replacing an old Petmate fountain. We, and our cats, prefer the Cat Mate because of the following reasons:

- Quiet design. The Petmate was very noisy. Both fountains actually have the same motor, but the Cat Mate fountain has a special clamp which prevents the motor from vibrating and therefore creating noise. The old Petmate's motor relied on suction cups which allowed the motor to vibrate against the frame of the fountain. The new Cat Mate fountain is very quiet.

- 3 pools of water with 2 waterfalls. This design allows for the cats to drink from two elevated pools of moving water, or two waterfalls, or the larger pool of still water. This also allows our cats to drink from the same fountain at the same time. They also seem to prefer the water falls over the Petmate's water ramp. The design also has a faster water flow rate compared to the Petmate (the cats seem to prefer this too).

- Easier to clean. The design is easy to disassemble and is dishwasher safe. The Petmate and Drinkwell designs are not and harder to clean. You will want to change you fountain water at least once a week (we change ours twice a week) and put it in the dishwasher at least once a month. This process is much easier to do than with the old Petmate.

- Money!!! The Petmate is more expensive for a worse design. Our grown children have a Drinkwell which they say is better than the Petmate, but it costs over twice the price of this Cat Mate.

In short great fountain for less bucks.

5Cat Mate Pet Watering FountainDec 28, 2009
By Ted J. Cohen
Excellent product. I have used several other brands of pet fountains for my cats and this style is the best. First, it is very quiet and does not have the usual splashing sound. However, it does efficiently airate the water with 2 waterfalls. There are 3 pools of water from still water to a flowing stream and the cat can select which from which to drink. The water is filtered and a very strong pump circulates the stream.

This unit is very simple to clean. The entire top pops off to allow for a good scrubbing and to change the filter. I clean it about once a week; the water is still clean, but the walls get a slight slippery feel. Other water pumps seems to leave a film of household dust on the water surface, but this unit always has a clean surface. My cat adapted to it easily. Highly recommended.

5The BEST design of water fountain for one or more cats!Apr 07, 2010
By Victor
I've held back on reviewing this item as I wanted to have sufficient time with it. It really wasn't necessary as my view of it has not changed since its purchase. Now, as to the purchase itself, the pet shop which sells this through Amazon was quick, efficient, and friendly. As to the fountain itself:

Pros:
. the fountain is only two pieces: a top and bottom
. the pump is very quiet due to its method of attachment
. Petmate filters work perfectly and only cost $3-4 at Wal-mart for a set of 2 filters
. due to the design of the fountain, and the location/placement of the filter, the water is cleaner than other fountains, including Petmate and Drinkwell fountains.
. multiple water levels plus water ramps provide easy access with multiple cats. I'v watched 3 of my 4 cats drinking simultaneously from different parts of the fountain. And, yet, the size of the fountain is similar to that of regular Petmate or Drinkwell fountains
. holds 70 ounces of water, 20 more than the original Drinkwell this replaces
. because of its two-piece design, cleaning and changing filters is easier than other fountains

Cons:
. because of the way the pump is housed, setting the "speed" of the pump needs to be done prior to turning it on. Luckily, changing the speed is as easy as turning pump off, lifting to section, and rotating the speed dial. The factory setting is dead center and should be suitable for most people. I have mine set a bit more toward max as to have a stronger flow. I list this as a "negative" but in truth it really isn't a problem. With the speed control contained inside the housing along with the pump, the cats can't play with it or change it accidentally. And, yes, my cats did that quite frequently with the Drinkwell.
. the filter that comes with the Cat Mate fountain is truly laughable. I tossed mine out once I verified that regular Petmate filters fit perfectly and did a better job of filtering the water

The bottom line:
What you may not read or find out until you buy this is that Cat Mate Fountain is made by the same company that manufactures the Petmate Fountain. Cat Mate, however, is mostly sold in Europe, and a bit harder to find here in the USA. The pump that comes with Cat Mate is labled as PetMate. I would definitely, and have, recommend this fountain to anyone looking to replace their current or looking for their first pet fountain. You'll be quite satisfied with this purchase.

3Cats love it, I'm unhappy with itApr 08, 2010
By RCB
I purchased this Cat Mate Pet Fountain because of the reviews. The cats, 4 of them, love the running water. I even think that it is a cool fountain. But.......the filter doesn't fit tight into the bottom of the fountain, therefore allowing hair and other small items to slip under the filter and get caught in the pump. Then the pump makes gurgling noises and a lot of air bubbles. This started happening after only a few weeks. Even though I cleaned the dish, filter and pump every few days. [with 4 cats, it gets yucky quick.] The problem with the pump is, it doesn't come apart so you can get the gunk that slipped under the filter out of it. So now I have to mess with the pump almost everyday to stop the noise and bubbles. Since the cats love it so much, I don't want to take it away from them. So I guess I will keep fiddling with it till it dies. Oh....and by the way, the pump is made by Pet Mate.
