Great for lowering pH and GHJun 18, 2011

I have naturally occurring high pH and GH tap water. That would be fine for African cichlids but my preferences lie with South American black water cichlids, which require the opposite conditions of my tap water. I bought a tub of Seachem Discus buffer because I have used Seachem products before and have been overall pleased; their Discus Buffer did not break the trend.
I have to use quite a bit of the buffer when doing water changes but my aquarium's pH lingers stably at about 6.8 instead of my tap-water's 8.0 and my general hardness is halved to about 10. These conditions seem to be great for my cichlids which have been breeding in my tank on almost a weekly basis. Most importantly, my pH and GH are stable, no wild swings.
The buffer comes in a nice reusable bucket that easily stores under my tank. I simply calculated how much buffer to use to get my tap water perfect. I add the buffer, which quickly dissolves, as I mix the water for my water changes in 5 gallon water cooler jugs. My tank is 150 gallons and I am changing out about 30 gallons a week, so I am burning through my buffer fast, but when bought in bulk, Seachem Discus Buffer isn't very expensive.
As a bonus, the water I am changing out of my tank is absolutely perfect for houseplants and outside plants. The lower pH and added softness are great for just about any plant.
I know you are supposed to use distilled or neutral water for the buffer to work best, but for my needs, Seachem Discus Buffer is simple to use, easy to store, stable and most importantly, effective.
