The water from the bowl passes to the filter to remove all impurities like pet saliva, fur and other pollution found in the water. The water that passes out of the filter is crystal clear and free from impurities and odors. The filter has 8-layers the first layer consists of a mesh filter to trap solids. The second layer has small ceramic balls which effectively filter out heavy metals from the water. This is the primary layer, which enables the water to be more bioactive and hence precipitate the dissolved solids while passing through the activated carbon layer. The third layer also consists of a mesh filter to trap small solids. The fourth layer has activated carbon filter elements with silver ions to enable reduction of chlorine and remove any odors. This layer also enables precipitation of dissolved solids. The fifth layer has another mesh filter that traps smaller solids. The sixth layer has stone filter element to trap all precipitated solids and solids from entering the filter from the inlet. The water is clean when it exits from this element. The seventh layer has a mesh filter to trap the smallest solids and the eighth layer is a secondary layer of large ceramic balls to enable the water to be more bioactive after the activated carbon layer and stone filter have done their functions. The water passing through this layer makes the water bioactive and with the air pumped along with the water increases the oxygen content and hence makes the water taste better and healthier. This reduces the formation of algae and keeps the water fresh. These balls also contain the same elements as in layer 2. | | | Features: | |

The filter does the job and keeps the water relatively clean!Nov 04, 2008
By C. LEE I use these filters on the large water fountain for my cat Wyatt. Without the filter, the water will become dirtier faster (mostly because of pieces of food he puts in there from the large automatic feeder).
FYI, these filters are shipped 2-per pack, something that isn't mentioned in the product description.
not as good as they used to beApr 20, 2012

Even though I use ONLY filtered or purified water in the fountain, these filters clog SHUT in less than a week now. They USED to be good for a month, this is now too expensive for my budget.Very disappointed
Terrible FilterAug 19, 2011
By Nina I have had a pet waterer since 2009. I never had any problems with it.
In March 2011, I had to purchase additional replacement filters. I bought these. I have used at least 4 different filters and they solidify within a week not letting any water through. Compared with the filter I had been using (they never locked up), this is terrible!
I was used to the older filters so I didn't pay any attention. At least the last four times I have used the filter, within a week the water is stagnant, dirty and starts developing a glossy film.
If you are interested in buying these, contact the seller to make sure this problem has been fixed - or at least keep an eye on your waterer. Thankfully my pets didn't get sick!
COMPLETE JUNKDec 11, 2010
By T. Fogerty These filters are complete junk. They are a multi-layered filter, with each layer of filtration "supposedly" providing a beneficial purpose. However, this filter frequently becomes clogged. The first layer of filtration is a particulate screen; good in concept - bad in implementation. The useable surface area of this screen is less than an inch in diameter, so any debris (usually food particles and hair) that falls into the reservoir bowl will clog this filter fairly quickly. It usually takes about a week to clog it up. Once it becomes clogged, the water no longer flows. Well, so much for filtered water.
An easy way to unclog the filter is to back-flush it. Weekly back-flushing will extend the filter life for about a month before it has to be replaced.
The filters originally came four to a pack, then three to a pack, now only two to a pack, but the price has never decreased. Ok, blame it on inflation. (Greed?)
