Simple yet usefulFeb 17, 2008
By Malvia4444 This hay rack is meant to be hanged outside of the cage so your pet can nibble on the hay through cage wires. I had one just like that and it came with the hutch I bought in the pet store. Once it got broken (after 5 years of use) I could not find anything similar until now. It is one of the best I've ever had so far. Most of the hay racks hold very little hay, are hard to refill and they take up the space inside the cage. I keep the hutch on my patio so it doesn't bother me when some hay occasionally falls on the ground, but I if you have your pet indoors... well just buy one of those small vacuum cleaners.

UsefulMar 16, 2011
By Adica I got this in preparation for a bunny because I didn't want hay to get wasted by being soiled on the floor of the cage, but I wanted to be able to offer my bunny a lot of hay at once to encourage eating it. When I first got my bunny, he didn't seem to know what to do with it, but I think that was because he was still very young and wasn't used to eating hay at all, let alone out of a hay rack. I put some hay in his pellet dish to get him used to it, and after a few week or two, he started eating the hay out of the hay rack as well. He now gets very excited when I put more hay in the rack. He seems to enjoy pulling the hay through the bars of his cage and eating them.
The rack is very simple to use and doesn't take up space inside the cage, which I like. Some of the smaller pieces of hay fall through the bars to the bottom of the cage, which I don't really care about much. He wouldn't eat those tiny pieces, anyway. In the beginning, I did have a bit of a problem with the smaller pieces and dust falling through the bottom of the rack onto the floor (still not that big of a deal, since I own a hand vac), but then I figured out that I could wedge the bottom of the rack into the small gap between the wire and the plastic pan of his cage, so I don't have that problem anymore.

Love it.Oct 18, 2011
By Lisa This hay rack is perfect. There isn't really anything else to say besides that. I got the color: purple, which is good because I have a male guinea pig. There is no assembly required and it's easy to put on the cage. There's no way that this hay rack could get lower than 5 stars. It's just perfect. :)

Keeps cage neatSep 15, 2011

I got this for my guinea pigs to keep their hay off the floor in their cage. When I put the hay on the floor in their cage, they quickly trampled it and most of it was wasted. Also, one of my pets had to be treated for an eye injury after getting a sharp piece of hay in her eye. My vet suggested a hay rack and I chose this inexpensive one.
With this product, they can pull only a few pieces of hay from the rack at a time as they eat, so the hay stays off the floor. I was initially worried that the pigs wouldn't be able to get the hay through the bars of the cage, since this rack mounts from the outside; but they had no trouble and figured it out right away. It is big enough to hold all their hay for a whole day and wide enough for the two of them to eat at the same time.
You can't see how the hay rack mounts in the picture, but it is very simple. There are plastic hooks on either side that latch onto the horizontal bars in the cage (no additional hardware - one piece design). It was easy to mount and fits securely to the cage. I have a homemade cage ("cubes and chloroplast" design), but it looks like it would fit any kind of commercial wire-top cage just as well, since it just hooks onto the horizontal bars on the cage.
As the other reviewer commented, a bit of hay does fall out of the rack and onto the floor. I sweep around the guinea pigs' cage daily to keep the area clean. But they throw litter out of their cage anyways as they run around, so a few extra pieces of hay on the ground doesn't bother me.
So so so messyJan 06, 2012
By SeattleMama I gave it two stars, because I honestly don't think a non-messy hay feeder exists. And at least it holds the hay pretty well and he can get it out pretty easily. However, the hay falls all over the floor and then into the pan below. Maybe I have an aggressive hay-eater :)
