Simple, no-frills, easy to cleanJan 08, 2011
By Elena This is the simplest dish ever. That's certainly not a bad thing! I was looking for dishes for my cats that are wide enough that their whiskers don't touch the sides (I read that some cats get annoyed by that), and most of what I found online were these awful unnecessarily ornate multi-colored grandma dishes covered in paw prints and bones and fishes and holy s*** there is no way I'm putting something that hideous into my otherwise modern, attractively-furnished home. I love this dish because it's simple, it's wide, it's metal (so it doesn't harbor bacteria nearly as easily as plastic), and it doesn't have any dumb pictures all over it. It's dishwasher safe!
The one improvement I would make is putting something rubbery on the bottom to keep it from slipping, but that's more of a minor annoyance than anything.

Too shallow to easily carry water!Jan 24, 2011

"Marchpane!"
Recently I decided to replace my dogs' white ceramic water bowls with something a little more stylish. I immediately settled upon stainless steel, which is a common enough material for dog and cat food bowls. Since my dog friends are all on the small side, I thought I might try out a shallower bowl for a change. Whereas our old bowls are about 3 ½" in height, I reasoned that a slightly shorter bowl might prove easier for them - the squat, droopy-chested dachshund in particular - to drink out of.
The Loving Pets Puppy Pan Dog Bowl is just under 2" deep, and comes in two diameters (8 and 10"). I purchased two of the 10" size, and immediately regretted it. The bowls themselves are nice enough, if somewhat lightweight - but they're so shallow that it's difficult to carry them when filled with water, if even just halfway. Such shallow bowls are really only practical if 1) you're able to fill them with water while they're already in place; 2) you only use them to hold food; and/or 3) you have the grace and posture of a ballet dancer or especially skilled waiter. None of which describes my situation. Probably I'll donate these to the local "pet" food pantry the next time I stop by with a goody bag.
Also: why do manufacturers insist on affixing huge, cheap stickers to the bottom of every dog food bowl on the planet? Unless they're heavyweight and peel off in one shot, they're impossible to remove without the aid of noxious chemical agents. DISLIKE.
