Not the highest flow but has run for +10 yearsSep 26, 2011

I have run one of these with the foam filter for over 10 years without a single sign of trouble. I run quartz sand that is extremely hard and will destroy anything in it's path but this power head has never made a peep of noise since day one. The adjustable valve for air introduction is great and the little muffler works very well. It doesn't flow amazing amounts of water compared to some of the other models out there but sometimes you want to direct some water to a corner that collects debris and this does a great job of it.

Great reliable pump.Aug 10, 2011
By ECW I use this in my freshwater setups and they work great and are very reliable (unless you get a "lemon"). I have owned many of these throughout my many years of fish keeping, all but one of these still work! The one "lemon" that doesn't has its motor fried and wont spin the impeller anymore. I have been using these powerheads for a long time and have ones that still work perfectly from when they made their electrical cords round and much shorter than the new ones. They work great with the sponge attachment and are wonderful with the reverse flow package that I use on my undergravel filters. In fact I have a clown loach tank with only these powerheads with the sponge/powerhead combo that has been thriving for over a decade. As for the reverse flow system on my 80 gallon it makes my undergravel filter a ridiculously awesome bio filter which saves me ALOT of waterchanging and my other tanks that dont have undergravel filters cant compare to the sparkling clarity of the tank with the undergravel/reverse flow kit combo. For maintenence I squeeze out the bio sponges and maybe once every couple of years I will give them a run and soak in a vinegar solution to make them like new! My penguin powerheads are also extremely quiet and make no noise whatsoever even up to the largest model. Marineland for me has built quality and affordable products that I can rely on for more than just years... So far for some its been more than a decade! I love penguin line of products, for some reason they last even longer and are more trouble free than my emperors (which is the top end HOB filter model).... (P.S. and we arent even talking about the Maxijet powerheads which are cheaper and just as great/reliable!!!!)
Great for the priceMar 19, 2012
By KLL I have been using for three months now, it still works as it should and runs continuously. Nice and quiet.

Penguin Needs To Redesign Their ImpellersMay 16, 2011
By Utah Bliss I have had this powerhead running in my 16 gallon saltwater reef tank for between 2 and 3 months now, and the impeller shaft has gotten scarred by debris and is now extremely noisy. This exact same thing happened to my Penguin 150 gph bio-wheel power filter. Penguin products just are not made to last. Which is really lame, because Marineland also makes Emperor products, which last a lot longer and are much better designed. You get what you pay for in aquariums, and it's definitely worth putting out the money for a better powerhead or filter up front, so you don't have to pay more to replace the cheap product later on anyway.
I replaced my Penguin Bio-Wheel with an Emperor 280 and now I have just ordered a Hydor Koralia Nano to replace my Penguin powerhead.
Do yourself a favor and just buy a better product from the beginning.
