What a time saver!Jul 12, 2007

We have two 5-year-old cairn terriers who have always been clipped. In the last year or so I've been doing it myself because most groomers don't know how to clip cairns, but it's such a long process and neither dog enjoyed it. Then I read online that cairns are supposed to be hand-stripped rather than clipped to keep their coats healthy, but that hand-stripping is difficult to learn and very expensive to have done professionally (if you can find someone to do it).
Fortunately I noticed that many cairn owners who don't show their dogs were praising something called a Mars Coat King in lieu of hand-stripping their pets, so I investigated and decided to try it. What a difference! You simply rake the dog's coat with this tool, and all the dead hair comes out. There's very little pulling, about the same amount as brushing. In fact both dogs yawned and laid down after a while while I raked them! In just an hour I had a pile of hair from both dogs that equaled the amount I usually clip off them -- but this was dead hair, roots and all, that NEEDED to come off. And it's easy and fast compared to using the clippers.
This tool can cut hair depending on how you use it, but it's best for pulling dead hair (or "stripping"). Our two look as if they've been clipped, but without the hassle and heartache. They just need a little scissor trim around the feet, ears, rump and whiskers to finish them off.
I bought the MCK 10 blade medium and also the MCK 16 blade fine. The 10 blade works the best on my two, even though the boy has medium coarse hair and the girl has fine hair.
If you have a terrier, especially a cairn, I can't recommend the Mars Coat King enough. Treat yourself and your furry friend to this wonderful product! You might never need to break out the clippers or visit a groomer again.

I bought this because of the people who recommend it for cairn terriers. Cairns are not supposed to be cut, but stripped (the complete hair pulled out). This item might be good for other breeds, or for cairns if you don't mind that the hair is cut. But the blades do cut. The individual little blades are like little sharp razors, so yes they do "cut" the hair. It takes off big wads of hair, but if you look at the hair it is cut, not stripped out. If you like this for your cairn that's fine, (some people clip their cairns--to each his own). But I wanted something that pulled the whole hairs out. This is not that tool. The product description does say "The Coat King cuts, but is better used to strip" Well, cutting is not stripping, so I'm not really sure what they mean by that. They do not give different instructions for stripping. If you follow their instructions the hair does get "cut".
I was able to find a stripping knife at Petsmart which does help you to "pull" out the whole hair.

I was using a Furminator on my Cairn terrier, Max, for about two years now. It did an adequate job but Max HATED it and I was noticing that it wasn't getting as much hair as I thought it should. It's a good tool but I don't think it's perfect for dogs with a top-coat and an undercoat. It just doesn't reach deep enough. I didn't want to clip Max and lose his top-coat, so after some research I found the Coat King. It seems expensive at first because it's such a simple tool, but after the first few strokes through his coat with this stripper I realized it would be worth twice as much.
First of all, the Coat King pulls an amazing amount of hair out. After about twenty minutes I had a huge pile of dead hair. This was only about a week after using the Furminator on him. One stroke loaded up the head of the Coat King with old hair, and after about twenty minutes of use my dog looked like a healthy young pup again. The other HUGE benefit of this tool is that Max actually seemed to ENJOY this. It pulls through smoothly and effortlessly tugs the hair out with almost zero discomfort for the dog (there were a few small areas around the belly and chest that Max didn't seem to like this, though). I think the blades (which aren't sharp or dangerous for the dog) give a back-scratching sensation. The quality seems exceptional as well- it has a wood handle and solid construction with what appears to be high quality steel. It's made in Germany, so this should be expected.
The benefits of the Coat King- living with a dog that doesn't leave piles of hair behind, looks youthful, and actually enjoys grooming, FAR outweigh the cost of this tool in my opinion. It's a wonderful investment for both you and your dog. Highly recommended.

It definitely helps thin the coat out. It doesn't seem to shorten the hair at all, which is kind of what we hoped (we saw it on a Cairn website). It will pull out wads of old hair, we do it about once a month.
