3This Gate is Nothing to Brag about!Dec 28, 2005
By Carla A. Curcuro
This is more like a standard gate. I use it in my baby's doorway to keep our dog out. It is difficult to open to get through the gate. I will replace it with a swing door gate soon! The gate would be better used in a non high traffic area or for tempory use.

5Love this gateMay 04, 2009
By Robert Blanco
The Supergate III is awesome. It is a standard gate that does it's job and does it well. I have a 36 LB 2 year old, 8 yr old, 10 yr old, a 40 LB dog and 2 cats.

The gate is easy to adjust. Just point the adjustable arm down and adjust the gate to fit the opening. It slides easily and if necessary, can be adjusted with 1 hand. If you don't point the adjustable arm down, it won't slide. In which case you may find yourself winding the arm to adjust the gate. To those that do? "Ha ha, you're an idiot!"

To the engineer: Look at the gate, see how it works before you complain that it doesn't.

It doesn't take paint off my walls and I have a cheap home built by DR Horton. It keeps my kid and the dog behind the gate just fine. The only time the gate didn't hold was when you fail to clear the gate when going over it, which only happend 3 times in the 6 months I owned the gate. My 4 and a half foot tall daughter gets by the gate with no problem.

At night I take down the gate and collapse it down and open it up when I need it. If you require instructions to know how to operate gate then this is not the gate for you. I love this gate and own 2 of them.

5No Gate Is Perfect; But This One Comes CloseJan 27, 2010
By Michael J. Gratis, Sr.
Reading some of the other reviews here, I had to wonder what some of those folks were expecting for this type of gate. A few of them, I think, were being totally unreasonable in their expectations and they certainly didn't seem to understand how these types of gates function. All of that being said, I've raised 5 kids and had 5 different dogs and know exactly what to expect with the Supergate III - It gets a 5 Star rating from me, and I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a child/pet gate.

First of all, the gate is made of heavy grade plastic that feels substantial, is of a grade that should not easily crack, and cleans easily with a damp cloth. I think this is much more desirable than the wooden framed ones, and it only cost a few bucks more than them. Though a bit stiff when brand new (...I suppose a little silicone spray would resolve that fairly quickly, if you can't wait for it to loosen up on its own through use), the gate is easy to operate: Slide it open to fit where you want to put it, then rotate the lever to one of 3 locking positions. To unlock, push the lever in a bit with one finger and pull out past the locking notch with another finger, then rotate the lever. The locking lever acts as a cam that engages teeth on the gate, so it more or less has an infinite adjustment within its operating range, as opposed to having only pre-set notches, and makes for a snug, secure fit. I've used the gate on a variety of painted and wooden surfaces and have not had problems with scraping or any other damage. I've had the dog push on the gate and even jump up on it with his front paws to look over the top and it's never come down. The gate can be used five ways: As a pressure gate for mounting in doorways or halls, with attachable sockets to give extra holding power, with rail sockets to allow to be used between metal (or wood) railings, with hardware that allows for use as a swing gate, and using a combination of sockets to use between wall and railings.

For those who care about such things (....and you really SHOULD care!), North States Industries is a private company located in MN, with at least one branch in WI, and the gate is proudly made in the USA with an American Flag clearly visible on the packaging. They have a very good web site with product descriptions & manuals and, from what I've heard, they have very good customer service, though I have yet to need it.

2Annoying GateMar 22, 2006
By J. Wallewein
I received a couple of these gates free from a former pet owner at first I was pleased with the donation and then I tried to use them. First of all you have to slide the gate to approximately fit the opening which took me quite some time since it was very stiff to slide (probably a good thing if it were too easy a baby could do it) and then I over slid it and then I under slid it and then I had a screaming 10 month old wondering what I was doing! Once I finally got it to fit the opening and latched into place it worked fine for a little while until I needed to take it down and then later tried to put it back up again. It was then I discovered you have to do the readjusting thing nearly every time because it eventually becomes smaller than your opening again. During this whole process the gate scratched paint off the wall in several places so much for no touch up work!

Then by the time my baby became 1 year old he was able to push it over completely with enough persistence! Having a pressure mounted gate may seem like a great idea... not having to repair your walls, but let me tell you I would rather repair a wall or two than put up with these annoying gates!!

I suppose if you had a low traffic area and were able to leave them up most of the time you wouldn't need to constantly readjust them.. and with a toddler at your feet banging on you and it trying to get through the readjusting part was just too time consuming!

1Terribly frustrating to set upNov 23, 2007
By Christopher Nelson
As an engineer, I admire good designs and detest bad designs. This is clearly the latter! It's all but impossible to set this gate to the desired width. I've had gates before that had 1/2" markings do you could know what size to set it for and reliably put it up again and again. If this gate has markings, I can't find them and once the gate is set for the correct width, taking it down almost always changes the setting so you get to go through the whole frustrating process again the next time. Don't buy this unless you enjoy frustration.
