5Dog likes it, breaks very easily.Oct 25, 2011
By David
I have a small dog (yorky/maltese)

I feed him 1/5ths of a tablet 2x a day.

Breaking these tablets is very easy to do. It doesn't crumble easily, but rather breaks apart nicely. Also, my dog had no problem eating it right off my fingers.

As for the results, they are quite noticeable. Within 2 weeks his limping from one of his hind legs, which my doctor says it's not worth it to get surgery because of the long recovery/ possible infections, has gotten much better. I would recommend this product. Oh, and between the different levels, (level 1, 2 3) of this product, I called Nutrivet and they said Level 1 is mainly for the younger dogs, just to prevent joint problems. Level 2 can be used for dogs who may demonstrate joint problems/ limping, etc. Level 3 is for the dogs with bad joint problems.

3Good product, but my pugs hates the taste of them.Feb 07, 2012

When my pug was around one, I started giving him Nutri-Vet Hip & Joint tablets as a preventative measure against arthritis. These tabs contain glucosamine, which I have found for myself to be quite effective in maintaining my joint health. So I wanted to make sure my pug started taking these early on in his life since I've witnessed the suffering of my neighbor's arthritic pug now that she's older.

These particular tablets are for small dogs under 40 lbs. They are chewable tablets that are about ½ inch in diameter and ¼ inch wide. They're made with beef liver and brewer's yeast, so they sort of have a yeasty beefy smell. Speaking of yeast, some dog owners swear by it. Others avoid it at all costs. In particular, owners of deep-chested breeds sometimes try to avoid it as they feel it can contribute to bloat. My advice is to start slowly with anything containing yeast and see if your dog tolerates it.

Directions call for half a tablet per 20 lbs of weight twice a day. My pug weighs around 22-23 lbs. but I just go ahead and give him one a day without cutting it in half, since it's not scored for cutting.

When I first started to give these to Spanky, I was just able to toss them in his mouth and he'd eat them. But he gradually got smarter and realized they weren't a treat. Then I started hiding them in pill pockets. But that gets expensive quickly. So now I stick one on a treat, and smear it with peanut butter and give the whole big messy thing to him. Occasionally, he'll realize what I'm doing and will manage to spit the tablet out, and I'll have to push the tablet in and clamp his mouth shut, forcing him to eat it.

As he's young, it's difficult to say what effect these have on his joints, but he is able to do long walks and even jog for short distances without any trouble, so obviously his joints are in good shape. But his dislike of the taste makes me think that I'll have to try some other glucosamine supplements. Spanky is not fussy with what he eats, so these really must taste bad. I also wish they made these either in a smaller size or scored them for cutting.

My 7 year old Pug loves this vitamins! I give it to him once a day as a treat. He has(HAD) knees and hips problem, once the Vet suggested surgery if he did not improve. But he has!! I definitely recommend this product.

3Wish it was more palatable for poodle.Mar 26, 2011

This supplement comes in a pill form. For dogs about 16 pounds, like mine, you are supposed to feed one half of a pill 2x daily. The pills are easy to break in half. Poodle doesn't like the taste of them though! They are a chalky white with green bits embedded in them. I don't think they are flavored really, at least they don't smell good and poodle doesn't want to eat them. I have ended up breaking them smaller than half and mixing them in with his wet food, which is kind of a hassle since I was expecting a supplement that would resemble a treat. I haven't been using them long enough to see a joint improvement, but this company has a good reputation so I think things will be OK on that end.
