3Mostly big stems this time -- animals won't eat it -- consider smaller bags because...Oct 03, 2011
By Linda F. Palmer "Author "The Baby Bond""
This is about identical product ordered from a local pet store, not from Amazon. You may wish to consider purchasing smaller bags when not able to see the actual product before purchasing. My explanation for this is near bottom of my post.

We've ordered 9 lb boxes (comes in a bag in a box) several times from our local pet store and find the quality to be quite irregular. We recently got stuck with two boxes ($50!!!) of hay that neither our large bunny, our small bunny, nor our guinea pig will eat. We've had various bunnies and gpigs for a lot of years so it's not just these particular animals or that we don't know how to feed them. These boxes contain mostly large stems and some of it is even a little yellow. The animals will not eat these parts. They pick through for the few small green parts to eat and leave all the rest, even if we leave them with no other food available. At first we thought the animals were all sick because they weren't eating -- we give same amount in yard every day and in cages every night -- but then they were begging wildly for treats like never before so we finally figured out what was going on.

This big, uneaten hay makes a mess of their cages, turning into moist bathrooms, and a mess of the yard where they run during the day, making moist piles that can grow mold or fleas. We've had some of this bad stuff in earlier boxes but this is the worst by far. I'd give ZERO stars if every batch were like this but since most batches were mostly edible, and since our money was refunded for the unopened box and the distributor is considering refunding the half-used box (I brought a bunch of the uneaten into store too), I've given 3 stars. I see comments about this problem around the web and so am surprised there are no others here. They're eating about 20% of this current hay. What a waste of money and demand of our time cleaning it up.

I wrote the company and they encouraged me to continue to report problems. They told me that if my pet store was an Oxbow Preferred Seller, then I could return it, but they're not. I was upset until I spoke to the store and learned that their distributor IS able to supply a refund to them, meaning they could give a refund to us. I don't see Amazon listed on their site as Preferred either. You might want to check into whether it's returnable on Amazon before risking a purchase of 9lb or larger... I imagine it is, but I'd check.

Hopefully, if more people let the company know when the hay quality is bad, their quality control will improve and it will become less risky to purchase sight-unseen in the future.

This is why I suggest possibly buying smaller bags, if concerned about variations in edible quality:
Oxbow wrote this to me: "The 15oz, 40oz and 90oz timothy is hand sorted, however, the bulk hay sizes are flakes pulled off of a bale and placed into the package. We cannot hand sort the bulk as it would be cost prohibitive and would add air to the packing process and we wouldn't be able to put it in the size of boxes that we have available. From the description of your recent purchase, it sounds like you received a portion of the compacted flake in the bale and a portion of the outside (bleached portion) of the hay."

I've seen bad hay in stores from other brands -- it's certainly not just Oxbow. Our new M.O. is to buy bags in the stores where we can see what we're getting, rather than trying to order in bulk to save money, but probably buying smaller bags online would work too, if the prices made it beneficial.

5Our guinea pig just loves this hay!Apr 15, 2009

It was recommended when we got our guinea pig to feed him Timothy Hay as a part of his daily diet. We had originally gotten Oxbow and our guinea pig loved it. When we visited a different pet store, they did not have Oxbow, so we opted to try another brand - thinking: what could the difference be if it's just hay? Let me tell you, it's a HUGE difference. The hay was course and brittle, and our little guinea pig was so unhappy with it. That being said we found a good deal on this 9lb bag and hoped that the Oxbow awesomeness would be a repeat experience - and it totally was. Our guinea pig literally jumps up and down when we put the hay in his pen every morning. The hay is softer, fresh, and just seems overall like a better quality. We will always buy Oxbow from now on.

5Great for my rabbitsFeb 18, 2011

When I first got my rabbits, I just went to Petco to do all my shopping. I would get the Kaytee timothy hay, which did seem a little dried out to me but I didn't know any better. I bought this recently and as soon as I opened the bag, the differences were astounding. It smells, feels, and looks fresher. My rabbits have been happily munching this almost nonstop. If you want the best for your bun, I would definitely recommend paying a little extra for this stuff.

The little piggies really go crazy for this hay. I don't want to even bother with another brand they love it that much.
