bad wheel designApr 24, 2011

I had a hamster strangle on a wheel like this because they tried to get out between the rotating bar and the bar that attaches to the base. It was years ago, but thought I would warn folks.
Super noisy, but the BEST wheel for miceApr 12, 2012
By M.W. I will definitely admit that if you can't keep your rodents in their own room with the door closed you do not want this wheel- it is extremely loud and screechy. That being said, my mice have all LOVED this type of wheel and prefer it to the 6 different models I have presented to them. I have been a mouse pet owner for the last 3 years and currently have 3 tanks with a total of 6 mice. I also currently own every single style of metal mouse wheel I could find and the plastic noiseless "safety" solid type as well. I am currently buying another 2 more of this type because my mice will all go for this wheel and will push each other out of their way, ignoring the other wheels unless they are scared and trying to run away when I reach in the cage. I have used at least two of these wheels in 2 different cages continuously for at least 2 years without any bleeding feet, trapped tails, carnage, maming, etc. In the very beginning, a couple of my mice did have pink tail tips from touching the spinning wheel, but they were miserable when I took the wheel out and gave them a solid plastic safety one. So, I put this one back in and kept an eye on them and they eventually learned to stretch their tails down over their back far enough that they don't touch the wheel anymore and haven't had a problem with pink tail tips ever since.
Safest wire wheel on the market, and my mice LOVE itMar 19, 2012

I read a lot about wheels before I chose which ones I wanted for my mice. I learned that this style of wire wheel is far safer than others due to the arched stand, and mesh is of course much safer than wire bars. I hope that one day they come out with a mesh wheel in the same style as the Silent Spinner, because with this product, there is still a small risk - but because my mice get MUCH more exercise and stimulation with a mesh wheel, I decided that it's worth it. I can't protect them against all possible dangers, and exercise and stimulation are very important for captive mice. That small remaining risk is why I rated this product 4 stars instead of 5. I have been using it for about two months now, and I think it's fantastic.
My girls love, love, love this wheel! They grip the mesh with their feet and tails and spin loop-the-loops. They can easily run in pairs due to its 8" circumference and ~3" width and don't accidentally knock each other off, as they did with smaller wheels. I recommend getting the largest size that your rodent can handle because they'll be more comfortable and won't have to arch their spines as much. This size wheel fits in a 10-gallon glass fish tank on top of 3" of bedding.
This wheel does become squeaky if you don't oil it. I clean my mouse tanks every 3-7 days and always rinse the wheel in the sink and then spray the axle with vegetable oil. It's safe for them to lick (and they do love to lick it!) and completely eliminates squeaking. I do recommend frequent washing, since for some reason it gets much stinkier than plastic wheels; I just hold it under the tap and then wipe the axles with a paper towel to remove old vegetable oil, then dry it off and re-oil it. I have occasionally heard it rattle, but this only happens when I accidentally place it so that it touches the glass tank, and this is easily fixed.
If you want to read more about mouse wheels and mouse care, I recommend thefunmouse.com.

Wouldn't Recommend ItAug 29, 2010
By Beck I hate this wheel. I have this wheel because the pet store in my town didn't have any other type of wheel. This wheel is so noisy and wobbly you can hear it when you take it out of your room. The wiring is safe for hamster feet and it is cheap, but if you don't want sleepless nights...Don't buy it!

I like this wheelJul 06, 2011

I've bred Gerbils for more than 15 years and have experience with lots of products that have come and gone and I love this wheel, its just hard to find in stores. Its rust proof which I like the most. Plus there are no feet or tail injuries, as the mesh is very good on the gerbil's feet/tail. I use electrical zip ties to attach it to the screen lid of the aquarium cage. I also use smaller ones for mice which attach nicely to the mouse's wire cage. Thereby at night when the wheel makes the noise, you can 1) turn the lid upside down thereby removing the wheel from use at night. OR 2) safely spray the attachments with Pam Cooking Oil, which is safe if the gerbil licks it and eliminated the squeaky wheel.
