 Nice idea but needs a couple of tweaks to make it workJan 24, 2010

I was so excited to find this product because my Maine Coon Cat just loves hiding in things. I bought a kitty cube at WalMart that my kitty loved, but it got vetoed because the cat print fabric was way too cheesy for our decor. I had to agree. So this bed looked like it would be a great alternative - a cat cave that was neutral in color. It was so excited when it arrived -- the quality was great, it matched the decor, but kitty doesn't like it:
- It doesn't stand open on its own. The cave has no inner frame so it doesn't stay open like shown in the photo. Kitty is not enticed to go into it because it is collapsed unless I'm standing there holding it open.
- She thinks it's too small for her. She could fit into it, but she does not feel comfortable getting into it because she doesn't have enough room inside to turn around. She got into it one time and then backed out. She's never tried it again. :( She's a medium-sized cat and I thought 19" would be big enough, but it's not. This would be good for a kitten or a very small cat.
I gave this product 4 stars because it is really nice quality and I think the basic idea is good. It needs to be larger and needs an inner frame to hold it open. Then it would be perfect. I've decided not to return this bed to the seller but instead to donate it to a local cat shelter that takes care of kittens. I think it's a good size for kittens and they probably wouldn't get worried if it collapsed closed on them (at least I hope not).

I agree with the other reviewer that these beds are too small for a cat to actually go into, but when I got my first set I turned them inside out so that the fleece was on the outside and now my cats just love to sleep on them instead of in them. When turned inside-out it sort of forms a cup that the cats love to curl up in. The small hole on the top is annoying to me but does not bother the cats. They were intially sold, I believe, for ferrets, thus the size and the hole. Nevertheless, I am buying replacements and giving the old ones to the stay cats outside (who also love them). They wash very well.

My cat loves this. It's true that it won't stay open on its own, but Cody just pushes his way inside and curls up, looking out the hole. Or sometimes he curls up on top of it. Either way he likes it more than any other place in the house. (And, occasionally, he sticks his head out the hole and amuses us greatly trying to get it back in!)

I love this "kitty cave" and so does my 13# muted tortiseshell. She prefers it to anywhere in my place now. She has no trouble crawling into it...seems to like that it opens up just for her and is closed rest of the time. She also sleeps on top of it at times. Only issue was that the breathing hole was tempting for her the first use, and once she got her head out of it, she attempted to escape that way. Poor kitty, had to help her get back in (very funny though) and then she got out just fine and seems to understand that the way out is NOT through that hole. She does like me to reach in and rub her ears and forehead thru the hole though. She likes to "hide" in dark places, so this is ideal for her. Not for a "big" cat, I agree. But I don't agree with the "collaspes" comments. It did take a few months for my kitty to decide she "liked" this, so don't give up too soon. And, it is WASHABLE...HOORAY!!!

My cats really like these. Particularly my tiny cat. She tends to sleep in there all the time, summer or winter. My normal sized kitties tend to really only sleep in this during the winter or when it's colder in the house. Mine stand up fine on their own (so the cats can get in them) and if they do collapse, my cats just lay on the outside of it. I highly recommend this!
