Great when it works, very fragile plasticJul 28, 2007
By L. N. Ridge 7/28/2007 We have a howling Chihuahua. He barks at everything that sounds like a stranger. The first time we bought this collar it worked a good 4 months. The case cracked, and lost a big chunk of the plastic holding the battery. The battery stopped making contact. We still used the collar for about a month after it was no longer functioning, and the dog was still pretty good about not barking. But he started doing it more and more, so we bought another one.
The second one we bought was a different story. Out of the box, it just did not seem as sensitive. I could not make it spray (barking like a dog close to the sensor). The first one was real sensitive. Thinking it was the battery, I put a different battery in and the case cracked; same place as the first one. The battery cap is this heavy-duty hunk of threaded metal (about the size of five stacked dimes, slightly smaller in diameter) with a rubber o-ring gasket. It just seems you need to make it tighter. Anyway, superglue works, hot glue gun doesn't on this plastic... It's now been about three months since we've had a functioning collar, and the dog is back to howling.
The ultrasonics/beepers don't work, and my wife refuses to consider the shockers. OK I'm breaking down and buying this one more time. This time I won't break it.
What I have learned: Pros: Citronella is very effective with my dogs. Battery indicator is effective (slow flashing led) Low spray indicatory is effective (fast flashing led) Refill is easy The unit is surprisingly small, and fits a medium-sized Chihuahua.
Cons: These suckers are expensive, and don't last long. The plastic looks rugged, but is very brittle. Be very careful tightening the battery cap. There is no sensitivity adjustment. 6-volt batteries are expensive (Come on! This has got to be a conspiracy. How about using something rechargeable?)
1 star for quality/expense 5 star for effectiveness Equals 3-stars
Update 9/30/2007: We bought two more when I wrote the review (and I didn't break them this time). It's been about two months, and one of them no longer holds the citronella. It cracked in the back, and the citronella visibly leaks out when we try to refill it, probably because our dog scratches it with hiss hind leg frequently. The other is cracked pretty good but still functioning. In general their poor quality plastic ruins what could be an excellent product. I'd downgrade my review to 1-star if amazon would let me. This is just too expensive at $69 for something that lasts a couple months if that...

No problems so far, dog has drastically reduced barkingFeb 08, 2008

We have a 70 pound Coonhound that loves to bark at everyone going by. Apparently, as the neighbors informed us, she especially loved to bark when we weren't home. We tried the ultrasonic bark control that looked like a bird house, but she didn't care about the noise it made and kept on barking. (Even worse, it freaked our other dog out and he started acting really strange.) We only wanted to use a shock collar as a last resort, so we decided to try this despite the poor reviews. We have been using this for a week with no problems yet. We have noticed a big change. She now runs outside when she hears something and runs around like before, but she won't bark!! I think for hounds that are extremely sensitive to smells this is a great option. We are very satisfied and would buy another one if we needed to.

bark collarApr 01, 2008
By Barbara Kinney This is a very effective bark collar. It worked immediately for us. I just put it on our dog, let her outside, she began to bark, then stopped immediately. I like it better than the ones that shock because I feel that it is much more humane. It uses the spray of an unpleasant odor rather than the pain of a shock.

Great Product!Aug 14, 2008
By Chris I would give this 5 stars if it was only smaller. I turned to this product after several trainers and techniques, my Border Collie's excessive barking would not stop. I used it once and it worked so well all he has to do is see the collar and he becomes quiet. This is particularly helpful when his paytime becomes a bit boisterous. I am sure all dogs are going to have different reactions, however in my case, this was perfect. Definitely not for small dogs. It will fit mid sized dogs (over 15-20 lbs).

Worked Great for our Deaf DogApr 05, 2011
By J. Wilson Dillinger is a Great Dane mix that we adopted about 9 months ago. He is deaf, and when we adopted him (at 7mo old) the rescue told us "He's deaf, so he's quiet." That was a great theory, and indeed he has been relatively quiet, barking only when appropriate, until about two weeks ago. It started one evening when he went outside and smelled something weird in the air which started him barking. After five minutes I went out to stop the barking. He looked at me, put his nose in the air, and started barking again. I shook my fists at him (he can't hear afterall) and when that didn't work, I started chasing him around the yard, which he thought was a really fun game. From that point on he bacame a barker. Every effort I made to stop the barking only encouraged him to bark further. After a week it got so bad that when I let him out to go pee at 7am (he's an early riser) the first thing he did was run to the middle of the yard, look at me, and start barking... so much for our quiet neighborhood! I called my dog trainer that morning to ask about the spray collars... she said that they either work extremely well, or not at all. It depended on the dog and I would just have to give it a try. After I recieved the collar,I put it on him and let him go outside while the collar was turned off to let him bark without getting spayed. I didn't want him to associate the spray with the collar, I only wanted him to associate it with the bark. This way, I hopefully wouldn't have to always rely on the collar. I put Dillinger out, and as he had grown accustomed to doing, he began barking non-stop, tail wagging, as he waited for the fun game that he knew we would soon play (ie, me chasing him around the yard with a shaking fist). After a several minutes I casually went out, played fetch with him like no big deal, then I turned the collar on and went inside and watched from a window. He barked and it sprayed... his reaction was funny, he turned his head as if to say, "what the...?" Then he barked again and was started by the smell and this went on two more times. I kept the collar on him during the day, only turning it on when I put him outside by himself (which is when he would bark non-stop)to reinforce in his mind that the sptray was a result of the barking and had nothing to do with the collar. It took about three days and now a week later (and no more collar) his barking has stopped. My only comments are that you have to keep the spray thing filled, otherwise it might look like it's not working when really it is just empty. Also, the indicator lights are a little confusing, and the buckle on the collar was not well designed. But overall, I am extremely happy with the results and relieved that I do not need to resort to an electric collar. I highly reccomend this product as a first step toward stopping nuisance barking.
