5Works like a charmJan 13, 2010

Some of the negative reviews crack me up. Typical modern day attitude, blame everything on somebody else. Common sense will do much more than any instruction manual. Petsmart can't control the fact that an animal is an animal, which is why it is YOUR responsibility to properly train your animal, and not turn them loose till they are fully trained and under control. For the first couple days I took our cat past all the flags and scolded him if he tried to go near them (without the collar). I had to be very careful and keep a leash on him at first, because he would freak out and run blindly in any direction(including up my leg with sharp claws) when he got shocked. Only after he figured things out and knew that the beep would be followed by a shock, and promptly back away till the beep stopped, did I leave the collar on him without a leash. <--Reread the last sentence, because that makes the difference between a safe pet and a lost/dead one. Now he knows where his limits are, and sits on the edge while watching us work in the garden on the other side. The battery does seem a bit over priced, but no biggy. I've been very happy with the collar, it does exactly what it is supposed to do.

5Cats love to be outsideMay 18, 2008
By Bonnie Vanderpoel
What a fantastic way to keep your cat or cats safe.

I installed the petsafe in ground fencing two years ago and successfully trained one large twelve year old stubborn, car chaising dog, a very cooperative medium sized six month old pup and a six month old cat. The cat collar works with the same buried wire as the dog, so you could have as many pets in your containment area as you like. All you have to do is follow the manufacturers instructions doing exactly as they say.

5Cat fence receiverMar 17, 2010
By L. Edwards
After my vet recommended an electric fence for our cats, my husband and I installed one with collars for small dogs. Those collars were less expensive than this one, and the batteries lasted longer, but they looked too large and heavy for my cats. I got one of these smaller collars for cats, and they look more appropriate for cats.

Because this collar is smaller and weighs less, the battery is also smaller. As a result, the batteries do not last the same amount of time. However, unlike the small dog collars, this one has an "on & off" switch. As long as you remember to turn it off when it is not on the cat, it last longer than some reviews have indicated. In addition, with either the small dog, or cat, collars, it is important to check whether the batteries are still working. Before I realized this, I found my cat strolling in the yard on the other side of the fence. After I changed the battery, she wasn't happy that she could no longer go wherever she wanted.

In addition, the receiving strength is different on the cat collars from the small dog collars. I found that I needed to adjust the strength level on the fence when using the cat collar. If the fence adjustment is too low, the cats walked right over it without hesitation. But if the adjustment was too high, it was more distressing to them. The key is following the directions for setting the electricity of the fence.

It is said that cats actually learn the electric fence more quickly than dogs. I don't know first hand, but I found that my cats learned very quickly. Having the electric fence is a wonderful way to let a cat enjoy nature and fresh air without worrying that they will run away.

1Worked great for a whileSep 30, 2011
By K. Spencer "Angelica's mom"
(I'm posting the same review for the cat collar and transmitter since they both have to work for this to be effective.)
After 5 weeks...I have lowered my rating again from a 3 to a 1. What a difference a few weeks make. The range on the transmitter is now around 3 foot. Even turned up to the max it doesn't make any difference. The warning and the shock also now happen at the same range. I have tried everything to extend the range, I changed the battery in the collar...no difference in range, I have moved the transmitter up, down and even taped it to the wall...no difference in range. My cat runs right by it and avoids the shock if he's running fast enough. What a disappointment in a product that worked so well at first.

After 3 weeks...I have lowered my rating from a 5 to a 3 because of the following problems. My original review is below.
This worked great for a couple of weeks then I started having problems with it. The first problem was the collar going off in other areas of the house. I had it set up so there was a 5 ft area around a door that set off the collar. The collar started going off in bathroom 20 feet from the fence transmitter and around a vent even further from the transmitter. Also the signal was going through the wall off the house into a screened in porch the cat was allowed in. Check all areas in your house to see if the collar goes off, don't assume it's just around the transmitter. The signal bounces off objects. There may be a place far from the transmitter that sets it off.
The second problem is that the collar stretches, probably from the weight. My cat has got by it several times over the last few days and out the dog door. The collar doesn't work when it's loose. The collar has to fit right for the cat to receive the static shock. Check the collar at least once a day to make sure it's fitted properly.

After one week...Original Review
I bought this to prevent my cat from going out the dog door and it works great. I've only had a for a week but it works perfectly and was easy to setup and easy for the cat to learn what was off limits. I was so glad to find this because I was considering putting in an electronic dog door and the only ones with decent reviews were around $400 and that meant I would also have to buy 4 keyed collars for the dogs. So for $130(the cost of fence and one cat collar) I was able to keep the cat inside and didn't have to install anything. Note: As other reviewers had said you have to buy the collar separately but that's good because you can buy the one you need...cat, small dog, etc.

4Elaborate ProjectAug 08, 2011
By tkona-mido
I am currently in the middle of training my two male, 6-month old cats to use the collar with the Petsafe containment system. I think the product is probably a very good one and I am happy that it is available on the market (though I wish the batteries had a longer life, or were rechargeable), but I cannot say yet whether it is effective for cats and their independant nature. We live next to a moderately busy street and had been previously letting our cats outside, so they got into the habit of roaming to the neighbor's property and crossing the street, even hanging out on the street. Now that I have started the training, and therefore limiting the area that had been free range to them, my cats definitely seem to be stressed (they both come inside and vomit and have had diarrhea since I started the training 4 days ago...this may be a bug, but it could also be a stress reaction to the static shock and to the limitations in their habit). I am following the directions carefully...and it is very true that during the first days, you have to put your cats on a harness (and get them used to it in advance so they don't protest by lying down) and stand over them, watch them closely, and teach them where the boundary is. I also lead them to the line with a feather toy. The directions say that the cats 'may do something unexpected' and I would say YES: one of mine tried to bolt right through the barrier (the hedge) well after he knew that getting closer would provide a shock, while the other paused in front of the warning zone then tried to jump over the hedge thinking the shock was associated with the flags. Another problem I have noticed with both of my cats is that the shock creates a reaction in them where they jump back away from the shock and throw their jaw down so hard and fast that it gets underneath the collar points. This happened with both cats at different points and I felt that the collar was already a tad more snug than what they recommend. In both cases I was supervising closely so I could release their jaw (the cat can get stuck with its head down and be unable to move). Perhaps this only happens in the beginning, but Petsafe should be more specific about the things that can happen rather than describe this as "unexpected behavior." For what it is worth, I tested the shock on my own hand before I put it on the cats, and I was very suprised how strong even the lowest level 2 is (I tell myself that it is less painful than getting hit by a car.....) So I try not to let them experience more than 1-2 shocks per session without giving them a break.
I have also noticed that my two cats respond differently. One is definitely learning faster than the other.
Since I am in the training phase now (day 4) I worry that the cats will later go running after a bird and get stuck outside of the barrier (which will be the street). The static shock might be worth enduring if they can catch a bird, but enduring it again might not be enough to get them back inside. In short, Petsafe so-far seems like a great system/idea in and of itself, but it remains to be seen how well it works with cats and their strong curiosity and hunting impulses, and it is probably not reliable for every location. It is also a HUGE project to undertake installing and training. I had to take several days off work to do the training, to be available to reenforce the sessions several times a day. Also, many of the reviews seem to be written by Petsafe staff just talking about the "great deal for the money" blah blah blah....rather than real people/animals with real experiences and real advice.

As an update one month later, I am very satisfied with the way the collar works. Both my cats have learned the boundary zone and "tend" to stay within the area. Occasionally, that is 1-2 times per week for each cat, they jump outside the zone, either because they're chasing a bird or because the warning beep does not alert them (I tested this, and it is true that the warning beep can be inconsistent in areas, perhaps related to stone walkways, or soil quality or humidity (?). I will say again that it is not the "weekend project" that it is made out to be, and that it is very important to spend a lot of time reinforcing the location of the boundary with the cats and the beeping followed by static correction. But in the long run, I am sure it is worth it for both the animals' enjoyment of the outdoors and the owner's peace of mind that they will be safe within the yard.
