5Buying my third one!Oct 09, 2011
By V. Lague "vlague"
As nothing lasts forever, sometimes you do have to replace items you have bought. But, the fact that I'm about to buy my third Petmate fountain is really a testament to how good this item really is. My cats have loved it from the first one I bought many years ago. I'm replacing the second one because its bowl had developed a crack after working perfectly for years. I wouldn't think of buying a different brand of fountain.

Yes, I have to clean it once in a while. The water is hard where I live, so in addition to normal cleaning, I have to remove the lime scale. I take the fountain apart, put it in my kitchen sink with the drain plugged, and pour vinegar into the sink. (I buy large sized bottles at BJs!) The lime scale comes off without scrubbing and without using a chemical that could hurt my fuzzy little guy.

There are four pieces that come apart, from the top: cover, reservoir for extra water, what I'll call the frame, (for lack of a better term), and the bowl. The frame clicks into the top of the bowl, but is sometimes a little stiff to take off or get in place. There are little pegs that fit into holes above the bowl's ramp and on the right side of the bowl. To open, empty the fountain completely, hold the bowl tightly with one hand and the frame tightly with the other, and PULL! I have found that the fountain can handle a lot of force here because the pegs in my fountain, at least, are tight, but have had no problems with the way I have been opening. To put it back together, place the fountain bowl on the kitchen counter, align the pegs over the holes and the column that fits over the pump's output (You'll see what I mean when you get your fountain.), and PUSH! It's really not that bad. I was frustrated until I realized that aligning all the pegs and the "column" makes the difference. If necessary sometime down the road, you can buy replacement filters and pumps here at Amazon. Buy and enjoy. I know I will!

4One lemon out of five isn't that bad...Apr 19, 2012
By catcrazy "jp"
This is my 5th Petmate fresh flow fountain and second one this size. However, I've only had this one a month and it has a leak. Leaked all the water out on the floor and unfortunately discovered it at 3:30 a.m. when it woke me up making such a racket because the water level was below the pump. At first I thought it was just out of water and went to fill the reservoir then stepped in the water. Purchased March 6th so my return period expired on April 8th, this is the 19th, so now I'll have to buy another one. Like the product, and so do my cats. One lemon out of five isn't that bad, I guess. Just disappointed it broke. Suggestion to the manufacturer: Have you ever thought about making them out of ceramic instead of plastic? Better for the environment and pets.

4My Cats Like itApr 10, 2012
By Bonsai Lady
This is the second one I have bought. The first one still works, but it's getting harder and harder to clean. My cats won't drink from a fountain that drops the water like a waterfall. This one lets the water run down a slide and the cats will use it. The biggest con (and the reason it got 4 stars) is it is very difficult to open the pump compartment to clean. I fear I will break the tabs each time. I'm always amazed that I didn't when finished. I bought the first one in 2008 and it still runs.

5Best INvestment for your cats health!!!!!!!Sep 16, 2011
By Elise McGregg "Elise"
I have had two of these and they last forever. The only reason I got the second is because I had more cats at one time and needed a bigger one.

I don't know how many yrs the first pump lasted but yrs, 3-4 at least, and that one I did not know I was supposed to take apart the little pump and clean it. which is easy when you read the book. It is 3 pieces to take off.

I made a comment on another review then decided to make my own here.

This is quiet if you keep the water from getting too low. THen it will start gurgling growling which is a good thing, keeps from burning out cos you hear it and put more water in.

I keep mine runnig 24/7, thats what keeps the water pure and fresh and the cats LOVE IT!!

I use double filtered water, water that is filtered with the high end filter at the faucet, the kind that removes all those icky pesticides , chlorine, and other chemicals from the water, and then pour through the brita picture which I keep in the fridge for us all, 3cats, two humans, lol. I cook with that water too.

The second filter is prob overkill but hubby bought thinking they would replace the filter at the faucet, so I use them.

If you use filtered water you will NOT have to replace your filter, just wash it good in soapy water when you wash the fountain and rinse really good, keep a toothbrush in the drawer by the sink to clean off outside of filter, the only thing the charcoal filter does is take the chlorine out of the water, so if your water is already filtered no need for fresh charcoal, but you still need the filter to catch a lot of stuff to keep your pump from gunking up bad.

Adding white vinegar and baking soda as someone else mentioned will make cleaning the fnt. better

The pump will catches the hair that gets past the filter.

ONE OF MY CATS IS 17 YRS OLD,and two 15yr olds with no kidney problems!!! I attribute that to this running fountain and filtered water.

You need to wash in hot soapy water once a wk or at least once every two wks, I don't put water in the reservior as it is easier to just pour fresh water in, top it off as it goes down. I keep the fountain near the fridge.
I cannot imagine life without this pump for my cats!!!

Great price here.

4Both cats love it!Feb 25, 2012
By Mom to Alysse and Robin
I bought one of these at Walmart after my small 13 year old cat was diagnosed with kidney disease. Once they figured out what it was, neither cat drank from a bowl again until recently. I recently went to buy another and now they sell a different brand. I needed one because the cat had lost her sight and wasn't liking to venture to another part of the house for water. She hates the new one (Aqua Cube) and prefers to drink from the bowl I placed next to the new one. Both fountains are a little noisy and I wouldn't want them in my bedroom but they are Ok. I do wish you could unplug it from the bowl for cleaning rather than from the plug but that is minor. I you have a cat with kidney disease, this fountain or one like it is critical.
