Pump is very durable and reliable!Aug 26, 2008
By Sumo82 This pump is the best ever! I found my bowl dry and the pump kaput, so I assumed I had damaged it. I began looking to buy a new one, and checked the PetMate website which said "PLEASE READ THE PUMP MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS BY CLICKING HERE. PLEASE FOLLOW THE PUMP CLEANING STEPS BEFORE CONTINUING." I followed the instructions and found that my impeller magnet was coated with minerals. I followed the instructions and it is now working perfectly! Here is the link to the cleaning instructions referred to above. Just copy and paste in your browser... http://petmate.com/pdf/freshFlowInstructions.pdf

Sorta Compatible with Drinkwell PlatinumAug 30, 2010
By Fly-Boy I bought this as a replacement pump for my Drinkwell Platinum after reading a comment from someone that this pump could be used as a replacement part for the Drinkwell Platinum.
This pump will work on a Drinkwell but with some issues. You will no longer have flow control (the flow knob from the old pump looks like it should be swappable to the new pump but it isn't) and the lack of the flow control knob creates a hole in the fur screen that is supposed to keep fur from clogging the pump.
So Yes it will work on a Drinkwell Platinum, but it results in needing to clean the pump more often and the water flow will be full power all the time and is no longer adjustable.

pump works greatSep 12, 2009
By Larry Cooper We have the Drinkwell Platinum so the pump looks different. We could not find a replacement for it, but if you just change out the front part of the pump with your old one, it works just fine.

Affordable, but no flow valve = spillageAug 21, 2010
By TheBaub Good: Cheapest pump I found Bad: No valve = water spillage Misc: Able to install valve from existing pump
I like how this pump is more affordable than the other replacement pumps for the Petmate fountains.
I have a Petmate fountain (50 oz.) already, but have rarely used the flow valve. I simply set it to the flow desired and forgot it was adjustable. When the cable on the old pump had electrical problems and needed replacing, I chose this cheap pump with no valve to save a couple bucks.
After turning the pump on and leaving it overnight, I found a huge puddle of water all over the floor. After some investigation, I discovered that the pump is just a little too powerful for my fountain. Water collects around the edge of the fountain lid and eventually spills out.
After a couple failed attempts at workarounds involving blocking the water flow, I thought to check the old pump to see if the pump face (w/ flow valve) was compatible with this one. It was the same size / shape and installed perfectly.
Bottom line: If you are replacing an existing pump and your pump face with flow valve is undamaged, you can install it on this pump and it will work great. If you don't have a valve, this pump may cause water spillage.
*Note, this experience is based purely on the 50 oz. Petmate fountain. I can neither confirm nor deny out-of-box compatibility of this pump in the 108 oz fountain.

Clean your pump before you buy a new one!May 09, 2009

Go to the manufacturer's website, Petmate and find the instructions on how to clean the pump. I thought my pump had bit the dust but as it turns out, I just had to clean it. You clean more than just the top cover.. two more layers come out!
