Good cage, could have been betterJul 11, 2009
By Lynne Rose This cage is roomy, well laid out and very attractive. It's the perfect size for rats. The front door is large and any place in the cage can be reached easily by using it. It is a dream to clean. Slide out the bottom tray, clean it up, swipe down the ramps and shelves and you are on your way in 15 minutes. The solid shelves and ramps are very safe. There is plenty of room for a large wheel and lots of toys and nesting boxes. On the negative side, there is no door on the top, despite one being listed in the description. The cage was VERY difficult to put together. The pieces did not line up perfectly and even being off by an 1/8 of an inch made it difficult to get everything to fit. Pliers and a strong arm are necessary. Also, if you do not use the optional grate on the bottom of the cage, the plastic bottom sags. I'm not sure if it would gap enough to let rats out, but I propped it up with books just to be on the safe side. The books take up valuable storage space. Also, I really hate it that most cage manufacturers use black plastic as the flooring. Makes it difficult to find rat poop for spot cleaning! All in all it is a very good cage, but not perfect. I'm still searching a perfect one!

Better than my old cage, but still has flawsJan 03, 2012
By kokeyjoe I bought this cage today for my single chinchilla. I did not buy it from Amazon, I went to a brick-and-mortar, but I wanted to let other Amazon customers know some things before they buy this cage.
The number one problem with this cage is its ACOUSTICS! I don't know what it is, the amount of metal in it or how all of the pieces of the cube have a little wiggle room that causes them to reverberate, but when my chinchilla jumps from ledge to ledge... the sound is headache-inducing. My chinchilla's original cage was all metal, as well, and I didn't think anything could be louder than that, but I was wrong. This cage is very loud. I typically leave the ramps out of cages, so my chin can jump around and exercise her little legs, but tonight I broke down and installed the ramps to the ledges, hoping she might use them a little bit and cut down on the excessive noise. If you have rats or other animals for which this cage is designed, you'll probably be okay, but for a hopping animal... it is not ideal. But then again, any other material would not be as chew-proof as this, so it's a catch 22.
My next complaint is the somewhat shoddy craftsmanship. I read another review saying this cage required strong hands and a set of pliers... I wish that was all I needed. Not only were some of the wall panel pieces pretty warped, but some of the holes weren't drilled properly and would not line up with the inserts on other pieces. I needed to break out my Firestorm drill and re-drill two of the holes on one piece. Not the end of the world, but aggravating when you're putting together a rather large cage by yourself. Other than that, all pieces were included and everything came together relatively smoothly.
If this is not the first cage for your animal, be prepared for some differences... the width between the cage bars is a tiny 3/8 of an inch. To give you an idea, my old cage had bars that were one full inch apart. I love the fact that my chinchilla will not be able to escape at all, but be prepared -- if you have certain wood block ledges or food bowls that screw into the cage bars, they might be hard to fit in this much more reduced space.
All in all, the cage is quite nice. The casters roll well, the shelf underneath is good for storage, and the plastic tray slides in and out easily. The ramps are solid with no holes for animal feet to fall through, and the ledges are solid, as well. The cage is quite high, though, so if you have it up against a wall, I'd recommend a knocked-down cardboard box behind it, to keep any falling animal "debris" from hitting your walls.
But lastly, let me just state again, if you have an animal that hops... the slamming sound as your animal jumps around will be very annoying. I wish there was a way to let your animal "test drive" a cage before buying it...
Good luck, and enjoy!

Good value, not perfectJan 18, 2011

Overall I do like the cage. I may never find the *perfect* one, however. It's extremely difficult to get a 5 star rating out of me anyway. lol
The inside is very spacious. The shelves stay in place and the ramps work well and I like very much that they are not wire, but solid instead. I actually had to take them apart today (I have two cages) for a thorough cleaning and it was really quick & easy. Cleaned the shelves & ramps off with baking soda & vinegar and just scrub the bottom tray with regular soap & water. No problem.
I do wish there was a an option to not use the wire bottom, as other reviewers have stated. But I really like the storage shelf underneath where I keep their fleece hammocks for quick replacement when I have to take some out for laundering. It would be great if there was a guard along the bottom so the animals inside couldn't knock poop or whatever out the sides of the cage.
I have rats and had 5 in one of them and there was plenty of room until they got to the "teen" years and are being moved into a bigger cage. The other cage houses 2 and there is PLENTY of room for them, no need to move to a bigger house at all. The rats seem to really like the cages. I'd say there is plenty of room for up to 4 adult rats in one of these. I really like the spacing of the bars as well.
Something I do really like about the cages are that there's plenty of room for accessories, houses, hammocks, etc., and plenty of spots to hang water bottles and chew toys.
The front doors on them are so big that you could actually put much of your upper body inside the cage if you're an average sized person (I'm 5'4", so totally average).
I don't know why the description says there are two doors, because there is only one. I'm not crazy about the latch on it but the rats cannot get it open, so I can live with it, and then I just padlock them when I don't want the kids getting in and bothering them when I cannot supervise. (Padlock does not come with the cage.)

Great cage for rats!!!Oct 22, 2010
By Rachel L Wersted I purchased this cage for 2 rats. I think I looked at every other cage on the market and researched for a week before buying this one and could not be happier. I couldnt' get any of the ferret nation or marshalls cages because the wire spacing was too big for rat babies. I found it very easy to put together but do think you need an extra set of hands, mine was a 6 year old's and it took us 20minutes from start to finish. Everything went together easily and secure. The cage is a really good size (bigger then pictured) and the cage door is nice and big so that you can put a good size litter pan in the bottom as well as bulky toys. It rolls around smooth on the wheels.
Of course there are some faults: I do not use the wire tray at the bottom so I put the plastic tray in place of it and it does sag in the middle since it is not made originally for a critter to sit on. I keep my litter wedged in the middle to hold it up. Now this is only a problem if you don't use the wire grate. My only real complaint against the cage as it's made is that I wish the plastic tray was much deeper. I can't put the amount of litter that i would want and it falls out all over the place. No a huge deal but my only wish.
On a whole the grate/tray problem is minor and I would highly recommend this cage for ratties!!! I am pleased with this purchase.

Good cage, poor packagingApr 02, 2012
By cmarch First and foremost, this is an attractive cage that more than serves it's purpose. As a chinchilla owner, I was happy to find something with safe, solid shelves and ramps. The cage is an excellent size and still gives my chin enough room to run around. The shelf on the bottom of the cage is helpful for storage and the pull out tray is WONDERFUL for clean up.
That being said.. the packaging of this product was less than impressive. The screws needed to assemble this cage were NOT included in the package and because the cage needed to be assembled promptly, we ended up making multiple trips to the hardware store because the instructions do not tell what size screws are being used! I contacted customer service who offered to mail me the screws, which being as the cage was already assembled with screws NOT from the manufacturer, there was no point. Double check your product when you get it!!
