Well made and dependableDec 21, 2010
By stasha27 I've owned this feeder for almost a month and so far I like it a good deal. It is solidly made, and the lid locks which is a useful feature (keeps both my pet and my 3-year old from getting at the excess food!). It is a little tricky to program, which is why I gave it 4 rather than 5 stars. But if you read the instructions closely, and remember that it will always show you the time of the NEXT scheduled feeding (rather than the current time) you should be OK. Also the first time you program it check how much food it is actually dispensing. I set it for 1/4 cup but it actually serves 1/2 cup (probably due to the size of the cat food I'm using), so I had to adjust the number of meals accordingly. It does make a sort of strange whirring sound when delivering the food and it takes about a full minute to slowly put out the food, but it's quiet enough and seems to be dependable. I'd recommend it over the Petmate model, which I used before and which was cheaply made and kept breaking on me.

reliable and sturdyJan 20, 2011
By A.C. mom of 2 So far so good. It took me about 10-15 minutes to figure out how to program the machine. I highly recommend reading all the way through the directions before attempting to program. It has dispensed food at the right time and with the correct amount that I set it for. The only minor flaw for me was that you have to set feeding times at the hour (1:00, 2:00, etc) You can not program for 1/2 past hour (1:30 etc.)This was a small flaw in my opinion. My previous food dispenser was the Petmate LeBistro. I found with the LeBistro that the lid was very flimsy and needed to be taped down to avoid spills. Also my cat was able to take his paw and reach up into the LeBistro to grab a snack when he wanted. I had to use tape and plastic to prevent him from doing this. With this Qpets dispenser there is no room for him to stick his paw up to grab anything. Also another plus is that the lid locks down so no tape required. After 1 year the LeBistro stopped working properly for me and would jam up. Though this feeder is more expensive I would recommend over the LeBistro

Decent size, some good ideas, but unreliableJan 10, 2011

I bought the Qpets electronic self feeder, and was initially happy with it. Programming isn't exactly child's play, but it doesn't take a rocket scientist either, and the single page instructions are easy to follow.
The main problem is that I couldn't trust the electronics controlling the delivery mechanism. I came home one night, and the bowl was empty with the cats looking at me with an annoyed expression on their faces. I went to the machine to see what was wrong, moved the machine, and it immediately started dispensing product, despite it not being the programmed time for dispensing.
This happened on a second occasion, then a third time I came home and it appeared to be working properly. There was enough food in the bowl to indicate that it had delivered on schedule. Then, about 1 hour after scheduled delivery, my cat went up to the feeder for a snack, and it immediately started dispensing food again.
If the electronics were reliable, this would be a good feeder. The construction of the control panel is a little ropey, and it pops and cracks mechanically as you press the buttons, but it works as intended. The hopper is a good size (rather than the silly 4 cup capacity of those $150 feeders), and the lid securely locks to prevent access by hungry pets. The dispensing mechanism is a simple barrel dispenser, so there is no way for cats to get at the food via the dispenser port.
IF the electronics could reliably dispense the food, it would be the ideal feeder. As it is, unfortunately, I can't trust it to deliver the required amount of food as programmed.

I altered it to reduce amount dispensed...now I'm happyMar 28, 2011
By Brian Slade The timing mechanism works reliably, but with the small cat food I'm using it dispenses anywhere between 1/3-1/2 cup instead of the 1/4 cup it is programmed to dispense.
I did the following to alter the amount dispensed: The food fills a rotating barrel that is actually two, side-by-side barrels. I cut a piece of a new dish sponge to fit the width of one side of the barrel, folded the sponge in half to make it more of a cylindrical shape, circled the folded sponge in duct tape, then squeezed it to fit into the barrel where it then expanded to fill that half of the barrel. I made sure that the wedged in sponge would not obstruct the rotation of the barrel while doing its job to reduce the amount of food that fills the barrels. After testing several times it now dispenses 1/4 c. of small cat food at a time!

Error messages and unfed catsAug 09, 2011

I purchased this feeder from a different seller here on Amazon to provide our new cat with food that is separate from the other pet feeder we already have (keep the new and old cats from fighting over food!). Our original feeder is the Ergo AutoPet Feeder, and it's worked flawlessly for 3 years, I just didn't want to spend over $100 on another feeder.
However, after less than a month's use, I am returning this cheaper feeder and buying another Ergo, my reasons?
1. ERR message. I've noticed a few times in the past week that the feeder wasn't going off when it should, fortunately I was here and could see the ERR message in the digital window. "Fixing" this requires removing the batteries, then completely re-programming the feeder. I have replaced the batteries, even switched brands, but still get an erratic error message. This message completely locks up the feeder and the cat does not get fed. It's a hassle when I'm home to fix it, but could be potentially deadly to our cat if we were gone for a few weeks.
2. Batteries don't last long. Even high quality batteries last about 2 weeks when I have the feeder set to go off 3 times a day.
3. Every time the batteries are removed, you have to completely re-program the timer.
4. Smallest food portions are huge. It says you can program for 1/4 cup servings, this is untrue, smallest serving is about 1/2 a cup.
5. Programming is unnecessarily complex, and offers few real options.
I HATE this thing. Even before it started having problems, it was not something I would recommend to friends, as the Ergo version (although expensive) is so much better. now with the ERR message, it's just a hunk of garbage to me.
What good is an automatic pet feeder you can't rely on?
