5Excellent Air PumpOct 25, 2005
By David A. Roseman
Over 5 years ago, when I asked my local aquarium store for a recommendation on a quiet air pump I was told "Get a Rena". So I purchased one and hooked it up. The pump was so quiet that I couldn't even hear it operate which was important since the aquarium is close to my bedroom. Finally after years of faithful service the pump began to wear out with less and less output. I went to another aquarium store and was convinced by the sales clerk to get a Tetratec model. When I hooked it up it made so much racket that I couldn't sleep. I then went back to the orginal store and they sold me a rebuild kit for the pump for less than $8. I renewed the pump and once again it works flawlessly with no discernable noise. Rena pumps are just fine quality devices I highly recommend.

5As close to silent as you're gonna getOct 11, 2006

I bought this pump today and hooked it up. It made almost no sound. You could only really hear it when you put your ear next to it. I have been ignoring the loud rattle that my old pump made for entirely too long. It costs more in the stores than the other pumps, but its well worth it. Heck, the fish seem happier without a big rattling thing vibrating their water, remember sounds carry better through water than air, so if its loud for you, imagine how it is for them!

5Silent!!Nov 13, 2007

I just got in my 2 new Rena Air pumps. I have been on the long search for a quiet pump. This is it. I would suggest this to anyone who has a tank located where noise can be a factor. I am hopeful these will be running worry free for a long time.

1Rena 702A Model aquarium air pumpSep 25, 2011

When my one of my aquariums' air pump (Tetra 77851 Whisper Air Pump, 10-Gallon) started to get noisy (maybe of age), I ordered first the TOM Stellar Air Pump S-20 - 20gal to 30gal tank, thinking this product may be more quiet than Tetra, based on some reviews. Turned out to be so noisy. So I ordered now this Rena, as again, some reviewers said that this is the most quiet among all for the price. That didn't happen. It was by far as noisy as the other and had become so annoying. I just ordered another Tetra again and now I know among the 3, which one is truly the "whisper" type. Tom and Rena went to garbage instead of me wasting my time and effort for repacking them and return.

2Fine as long as you don't touch it.Jul 26, 2011

I've had this pump for roughly two years. It works fine and everything but one day I needed to change the airline and while doing so, the knob that the line slips over broke off at the base! I've pretty much treated this pump with kid gloves for these two years. I use it at room temperature, I don't store it weird with anything putting pressure on the knob, and I don't take off and on the airline frequently. I think the time it broke was maybe the third time I changed the airline. And I wasn't yanking on it either.

Therefore, there is no reason for this breaking besides it being of poor workmanship.

So I called Rena to see if they'd rectify the matter or if there's even a part that could be purchased to replace it and while the gentleman that I spoke to was very polite, they wouldn't stand behind their product because the short one year warranty was up. He also said that I could purchase a casing (at my expense of course) IF this guy he gave me the number to has any. I didn't even have that option because it was a dead number.

So let's review:
1. Puts out air fine.
2. Knob breaks with regular or less than regular use.
3. Manufacturer won't even stand behind product when defect reflects on their own workmanship.

My conclusion is that there are many air pumps that will pump air that don't break and will be backed up by the manufacturer when they're at fault. My money is best spent on one of those other brand's air pumps.
