Too easy to breakJul 23, 2009
By mamacat Our hamster really likes nesting in the little "penthouse" and the habitat is certainly easy to clean. But the latches and/or hinges on both doors have broken three times, twice for my daughter and once for me. And the sad part is, I was trying to put in the penthouse's brand-new replacement door when the little hinge snapped off. I can assure you we are being careful and gentle with this product, yet the doors are so brittle that parts snap off. And so twice our hamster has escaped. We are currently holding both doors shut with duct tape while we wait for replacement doors. The owner of the pet store where we bought it acknowledged the problem when he told me "Yeah, its a well-designed product -- except for the breakage." Then he said it would be a long waiting time for the replacement parts, an interval which he's apparently very familiar with because he's had to order lots of replacement parts for his customers. We are about to borrow an old-fashioned glass tank with screen top because the risk of losing the hamster again is not worth it. I can't really recommend this product, I'm sorry to say.

Great For A Dwarf HamsterJul 31, 2009

I purchased this for a dwarf hamster and have been very pleased. The water bottle doesn't leak and all the parts fit nice and tight. Meatball appears to be very happy in his home! I would not recommend it for a standard sized hamster though. I think it would be cramped and wouldn't be able to fit in the wheel to run.

do not buy this item.Feb 20, 2010
By Allen Hincks This cage is not worth buying. The water bottle leaks so much my poor hamster had to get the cage cleaned everyday.Plus when it arrived the cage itself was broken. Amazon sent me a new one, when that arrived it too was broken and the water bottle was exactly the same. So Amazon sent me another. Said it would be packaged better. It was packaged exactly the same, only this time it wasn't broke. However, the water bottle is still no good. Can not replace it with a different bottle because of the type of cage it is. So, I finally gave up and went to Walmart and bought a 35.00 cage with a water bottle that works perfect. Still have the one from Amazon sitting in the box. Not worth sending back because the packages must be sent by UPS in order to avoid shipping costs. UPS is in a different town 25 miles away and gas is not cheap. Anyway I ended up paying for the cage plus 2 trips out of town and have a cage I can not use. In my opinion just not worth it.

Great cageApr 24, 2010

We purchased this back at the beginning of February for our new dwarf hamster, Milo--and he loves the space! As one other reviewer mentioned this enclosure has plenty of room for a pair of dwarf critters--it's positively expansive for a single guy like Milo.
First, let me address a couple of issues mentioned in other reviews. Bear in mind I can only share my experiences with this cage--but I haven't had a single issue with leaky water bottles or broken plastic hinges or locks.
The water bottle has a ball bearing in the tube that MUST rest (slightly protruding) from the tube tip. If it's not properly placed, the bottle will leak like crazy.
Also, I have to believe the manufacturer has heeded their customers' comments and taken the proper steps to fortify the plastic hinges and locks on the cage -- because we have not had a single problem with broken plastic locks, as other reviews have mentioned. The makers of the cage have even placed a clear plastic label atop the "penthouse" instructing exactly how to close and lock the penthouse door. 3 months later (and I suspect this will continue) not a single problem with broken locks.
The cage itself appears sturdy and well-constructed. My daughter and I put together the cage in less than 5 minutes right out of the box. The various tubes, wheel, water bottle and flooring snap out and back in quickly and fit snugly in their respective bases in the cage.
The high impact plastic enclosure is EXTREMELY easy to clean--again parts such as the wheels and tubes are easy to remove and quickly snap apart for their weekly bath in warm, soapy water in the sink.
(I'd recommend refraining from running the plastic cage parts in the dishwasher--although I bet it could be done provided it goes through the "no-heat" drying cycle.)
Almost 3 months later the cage looks (and smells) as good as the day it arrived from our good friends at Amazon.
I particularly like the semi-fishbowl shape. It makes it easy to view Milo's various comings and goings from all angles, making it easy for me to figure out his whereabouts and not become concerned he has escaped.
As far as user satisfaction, Milo seems to really enjoy this enclosure. He particularly enjoys spending time up on the third floor "penthouse" (which detaches from the main cage and can double as both a handled travel case as well as a holding area during cleanings), running up and down the tubes and of course running like a maniac all night long in his little plastic wheel.
Now the wheel of course, like all wheels, can be as noisy as Hell--and as someone who has to listen to Milo party on his wheel from dusk 'til dawn I know what I am talking about--but it really is one of the better wheels in terms of keeping noise down to a dull roar. :)
I have to admit that I had some hesitations buying a plastic cage with plastic hinges and locks--and I anticipated big problems with breakage, crazing on the plastic and uhmmmm...odor. But this cage has been a pleasant surprise--and I recommend it highly.
This identical cage costs $40 at the big-box pet stores--but on Amazon (if you are patient) can cost $10-15 less.
Buy it, care properly for it and if your experiences are anything like mine you will be delighted with your purchase!

Very good.Jul 22, 2009
By razrodude There are dozens of things that I would improve, but it is way better than the crittertrail x model. Some things that bother me are the fact that the door doesn't stay open by itself, you need one hand to hold it up. Also, the wheel lets crap fall below it, but at least it doesn't spray everywhere like the x model. We just put a paper towel down adn it seems to do the job. Water bottle has not leaked... yet. The bars seem really far apart for our robo hamsters, and I'm always afraid they will get stuck. The wheel is way too slick, and when they stop running, the wheel continues to spin and takes them for a ride, flipping them over and throwing them onto the axel. The wheel isn't quiet as advertised, but it's better than the x model. The left latch on ours is defective and doesn't snap tightly into place. These problems are minimal compared to the X model, but there might be something better out there for the money.
