Very good cage minus the wheelJun 30, 2009
By Angie Arteaga
"cellardoor0087"
This cage is very good! except for the wheel that it comes with, it makes a lot of noise and it's not big enough for regular sized hamsters (ex. teddy bear hamsters), and also it doesn't have a cup where the droppings go, so it flies out, i recommend a silent wheel. Besides that the cage is perfect; Cookie, my teddy bear hamster, loves his home and it's great to connect with a lot of tubes and connect with more cages. I don't recommend the cage for robo hamsters, I have 2 so I know. Also the water bottle that it comes with leaks A LOT, so get a different one. Great cage, bad accessories :) hope that helps.

ADORABLE, BUT USE WITH CAUTION!Mar 27, 2010
By Elaine Campbell
"Desert Dweller"
Firstly, my two new baby mice just love this habitat. In fact, they are thrilled. They are used to a tiny starter cage, and this habitat has expanded their universe. They no longer want to use their ground floor igloo, preferring instead to now sleep in the top carrier where I put in some bedding.
The plastic is very fragile, so, especially with latches, handle gently. One of my initial problems was how to open it. I jiggled the front latch every which way and it wouldn't budge. This was particularly frustrating, as I could see the printed directions, including how to open the habitat, inside it. Didn't do me much good there!
For those with this problem, the directions are thus:
"Place your thumb flat on the plastic threads (raised plastic). Curl your index finger below the plastic latch. Push your thumb inward and lift the plastic latch upward simultaneously." I might add: Do it gently! Don't force.
After a few times of trying this, the latch gets easier to open.
WARNING: Regarding the wheel (which my mice love): If there is a cat in your home, beware. As another reviewer has reported, he gave a hamster to his sister who loved it. But she had a cat that knocked the wheel (it's an outside one) off the habitat. The cat caught the hamster, killed it and his sister was devastated.
AND IT HAPPENED TO ME. I heard a strange noise in the next room where the mice are, went to investigate, and my cat had knocked the wheel off the habitat, with one of the mice in it. The only thing that saved the mouse was that it fell with the opening facing downward on the table. Had the mouse gotten out of the wheel through that opening, I don't know if I would have been in time to save it. It still makes me nervous, but I have investigated other cage alternatives for mice, and have not found anything suitable.
MY SOLUTION was (hopefully) to secure the tube joining the wheel to the cage, on the upper portion, with a wide strip of shipping Scotch tape. It's better than nothing, and the wheel does seem to be somewhat more secure. It's better, of course, not to let a curious cat in the rodents' room (some cats won't bother them, and some cats will), but cats are willful and sneaky (clever I might add), and it is not always easy to control them. As Mark Twain said: "Cats were invented by God to let people know they are not in control."
SECOND WARNING: I walked into the room the mice are in after having been out for a while. Lo and behold! the water bottle had fallen off the cage, and a hole was exposed which the mice could easily have gotten through, to be caught by cats. Luckily for me, and for them, they did not exit the cage. So ALSO TAPE DOWN THE WATER BOTTLE SECURELY. I wrapped some wide packing Scotch tape around it, securing it to the bars.
THIRD WARNING: (And I wonder why such warnings are not released by the manufacturer, since there must be many unreported deaths of rodents because they are not.) Mice have very poor eyesight. They need to be kept in dim quarters to protect their eyes, which can be damaged by too much light. DO NOT BUY THE CLEAR, BUT IDENTICAL, CAGE as it does not protect their eyes as much as the colored-tinted cage.
FOURTH WARNING: If you add a vertical attachment, such as Super Pet CritterTrail Activity Accessory Kit, the mice love it (also tape it down, as it is loose); however, because the loop the loop at the top is colored purple, a dark color, if too much sun gets into the room during daytime, the rodents will sleep in it because it blocks out more sun. Since the cage has a nesting area at the top, this is not very desirable. So supply a good amount of commercial, but natural, nesting material in the nesting area, and watch the mice's reaction to daylight. If they continue sleeping in the loop the loop, then the room needs to be kept dimmer.
Lots of complications, but the mice sure love it. BUT BE CAREFUL FOR THEIR LIVES.
This habitat is a good buy if one heeds the warnings.
POSTSCRIPT: I finally gave up on this cage and ordered another one where the wheel and the water bottle are on the inside. To keep them from falling off and critters escaping, you have to tape them securely. Then I got the long vertical tube with a circular runaround piece at the top, but that too kept falling over, and also had to be taped. Then when you go to clean it, you have to take all that tape off. Too much of a drag. Best to choose one where ALL is inside, therefore, no tape necessary, and it should be much safer.

Used for Robo HamsterDec 20, 2009
By Nicole C. Martin We have a Robo hamster named Pee Wee and I got this cage for him a few months ago. Since they are not the most tame small hamsters, I wanted him to have a lot of room to excersize.
The good: Easy to clean. Very easy to assemble/disassemble. Easy viewing. The plastic front makes it so my 2 year old can see him and not be able to poke her small fingers through any bars and possibly get bit or stuck. Good ventilation on the back of the cage. Looks good! We keep it in the living room and it's really not an eyesore. The wheel is very easy to take off and take apart for cleaning. Since we have a Robo (and they run A LOT), I clean his wheel every day.
The bad: Don't even bother with this water bottle. Throw it away as soon as you open the box and buy a different one. Seriously. It's THAT bad.
For anyone who complains about the wheel, try this: take a paper towel with vegetable oil on it and rub it on the piece that goes inside the wheel. No more squeaking and it won't harm your pet with fumes or chemicals.
I'm very happy with this purchase.

Plastic BreaksSep 13, 2009
By JS I found that when you are disassembling the cage for cleaning, the plastic tabs easily break. We have had the cage for 6 months and 3 different areas have already broken. I would recommend going with a cage made of more indestructible material.

Good with AdjustmentsJan 04, 2011
By C. Wilson
"apricot32"
We really like this cage, but it required a number of adjustments to make it suitable for our needs. However, even with having to make the adjustments, we still like it better than anything else we've seen (and our three Chinese dwarf hamsters seem very happy in it).
Please note: The cage sold and shown here is the original model, and there is currently an upgraded model for this cage with a water bottle in the back (which attaches separately through an small hole in the wire caging) and an improved "latch" (which is still very easy to open). I purchased the upgraded model, but this cage can work fine with a few adjustments.
Postives: 1. nice roomy cage with large base and second level shelf 2. nice detachable hide-away on top 3. easy to clean; detachable bottom 4. plenty of space and 3 attachment holes for hamster accessories 5. includes a nice sized feeding dish
Negatives and Adjustments recommended: 1. Side water bottle falls out; *get the upgraded cage with bottle in back or *buy an internal bottle holder and switch out the openings with an accessory kit (we switched out with the "loop-d-loop kit 2"). 2. wheel is noisy, but worse, poop piles up OUTSIDE of the cage below the wheel! *We purchased a smaller 5 1/2" wheel by super pets which can be detached from its stand and hooked it to the inner wire wall. We adjusted the shelf level (5th slot on left, 4th on right) accordingly, and attached the above accessory kit to the original wheel opening. 3. Latch opens too easily (problem if you have small kids) *Attached a universal adhesive child safety lock from Safety First (check customer images)
Accessory kits we used and like: 1. Super Pet CritterTrail Loop-d-Loop Accessory Kit 2 2. Super Pet Critter Trail Burrowing Maze Accessory, which fits on top of the deluxe cage in place of the hideaway. We just got this and the hamsters LOVE it, but make sure you leave the wheel, water, and food in the lower cage, or they'll never come out again! 3. Super Pet CritterTrail Fun-nels Assorted Tubes & seperate loop. We used these to attach the loop-d-loop system to the burrowing attachment. 4. Safety 1st 48483/48367 Adjustable Multi-Purpose Strap
Overall, once we got the upgraded model (not necessary if you buy a seperate attachable bottle) and made some adjustments, we really liked this cage and our hamsters LOVE it!
