3Super Pet Crittertrail Z: Decent Hamster Home After ModificationsMar 13, 2006
By Andrew
There are several problems with this hamster cage:

1. The air holes in the nesting area are far too inadequate and do not allow enough air circulation and the nesting area is small. As a result, hamsters tend to prefer making their nests in the ball, which causes a mess from seeds and debris spilling out.

2. The latch that holds the wheel in place does not secure very well and the ball can fall out.

3. Hamsters can pop the door open if they chew or press on it hard enough.

This cage is easily disassembled and cleaned in a tub of warm water.

Modifications:

1. Bend the catch on the door down so that it catches more snugly and your hamsters do not escape.

2. After drilling ΒΌ" holes in the lid of the nesting area, the hamsters began to nest in the nesting area instead of the wheel. Apparently the small slits in the lid do not allow enough air circulation in the nesting area and the nest is somewhat small so the hamsters prefer nesting in the ball. After drilling the holes, the hamsters have made their nest in the nesting area more often.

5Wonderful!!!!Feb 03, 2007
By Shaun M. Mcvey "single daddy"
This cage is perfect for my dwarf hamsters. Putting the cage toigether was easy with the only difficulty in putting the top exercise ball together. I bought them a small house as a nesting space at the bottom and in the lookout tower so they haven't been nesting in the ball. There maybe a few stray peices of food in there which I dump into the trash every couple of days. Spot cleaning once a week makes cleanup easy when it needs it. The ball on top sqeaked a little when I first got it, but a little vedgtable oil fixed that and I haven't had a problem with it since. I have yet to have any escapes despite the added attention from my two cats.

2Hamster liked it but we didn't.Mar 14, 2009
By L. J. Klein
Our golden hamster liked this cage; he had fun dragging bedding up and down all the tubes. He made a nest in the ball, played in the downstairs area, and used the lookout for a bathroom.

The humans, however, were rather displeased for the following reasons:

Poor Design Elements
1. The water bottle comes down too low, and the tip goes straight down. In order to drink comfortably, a hamster would have to lay on his back. We solved this problem with a collar of rubber bands to raise the bottle and allow us to tip it at an angle.

2. The wire latch of the front door is too weak to hold with a large hamster shoving against it. We added a Velcro latch to secure it.

3. The peg that was supposed to hold the food dish in place does not work. The hamster could easily dump the food dish.

Poor Durability
The following parts broke, bent, or were destroyed by the chewing rodent:
1. The front wire wall - bent.
2. The clips that hold the top on, and therefore hold the hamster in - broke. Had to secure the top with elastic cords.
3. The latch to the lookout area - chewed off. Had to keep it shut with a rubber band.

Difficult to Clean
Even WITHOUT the extra cords, rubber bands, and Velcro holding this cage together due to poor design or durability, this cage was a pain to clean. With the necessary additions, it was even more so.

If we ever get another hamster, we are putting it in a plain glass tank!

1HAMSTER NOW DEAD THANKS TO THIS CAGE! DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS PRODUCT!Jul 10, 2011
By Farah Orchard
My hamster "Buttercup" is now dead thanks to this piece of crap cage! The plastic top of the lookout tower was so cheaply made that it popped open several times. I paid almost $70.00 for this worthless mess of a cage too and it is only a couple of months old. Last night my hamster popped open the top and escaped and at some point ran into my Himalayan cat and I found him dead on my kitchen floor. It was horrible :(.
This product is overpriced for the quality of it. In the future I will go with a wire cage that will be sure to keep my hamster secure and safe. I'm very dissatisified with this product!!!

3You can do betterMar 07, 2011
By Thanatos of Nyx "Barbarian"
While I like the over concept of the modular habitats, Crittertrail fails. My main three problems with the Crittertrail are 1)You can't see you animal because the colors of the plastic is too dark, 2) The plastic is WAY too fragile and 3) It's a ROYAL pain to clean!

The bright neon colors make it close to impossible to see my hamsters in it and I really don't care for that in the least. I bought this model and another Crittertrail habitat, which are both connected by tube, at Petco only a week ago, and I've already ordered a aquarium topper habitat because of the flaws of the Crittertrail design. There have been times that I have had to shove my face against the enclosure just to see where my hamsters are in it because of how dark it is!

The plastic is BRITTLE on the habitats as well. The first one came with the top section broken in the unopened box. I mad already driven the 60 miles back home, so I made do with it and it was in a spot that I could work around when putting it together. But, if you make the mistake of ever dropping t, you may end up with several pieces of habitat that WON'T go back together again. Everytime I put it back together after cleaning it, I'm worried that it will break, with the way it creaks and groans while doing so.

And cleaning!! OMG!! Ever wanted an extra part-time job? Well you've got it cleaning these babies out!!. For the tubes, nothing less than a bottle brush will work and even it takes some effort. It's an all day job to take my two apart, clean them and try to get them to dry out. The habitat isn't that difficult, but the tubes are a royal pain is the a%*!!!

Don't get me wrong, my hamsters seem to like it fine. I keep thinking that one of them is going to go flying off in the ball, with the way she runs in it ALL THE TIME! The other one loves the wheel that's in the second habitat as well. But they have a habit of sleeping in the tubes at times that worries me as, other people have mentioned this in reviews, I am afraid there isn't enough air in there for them. Neither of them seems to like the little observatory up on top though - don't know why and it has treats for them in it.

Either way, I have the new habitat coming this week. It's a three level one that sits on top of a 10 gallon aquarium, which makes it about 30" tall or so. We'll see how that goes. The one thing I think that they will like is that I can put the bedding in nice and deep with the aquarium (they like to burrow in it) whereas I couldn't with the CritterTrail because they through it out when burrowing. I may try to figure out a way to run a tube into the new habitat to give them even more room, since I've already paid $100 for the Crittertrail setup.....lol
