Do not purchase this wheelSep 03, 2008
By Debra Bradley I recently purchased a cage for my two rats that had a large version of this wheel in it. I had to rush one of my pet rats to the vet yesterday afternoon, after hours, because as she was running it the wheel, her tail became caught in the metal where the wheel attaches to the frame. Needless to say, she is missing two toes, about an inch of her tail and her face is is completely traumatized on one side after trying to free her tail. We were not home when this happened.
I would not recommend this product for use for rats, or any animal with a long tail. It is not safe!!!

The noise, the pain...Feb 22, 2010

I live in a large house, and because my oldest daughter Karen (14) was slightly irritated by the dander of animals, Quinn's hamster had to stay in the close by guesthouse. She had lately been sleeping in there with Chip (hamster) and had no problem with it, but one night we all decided to have a movie night in the small house. Suddenly, we heard this terrible screech, and at first we thought it was coming from the kitchen, but sure enough: it was this wheel. Probably the NOISIEST and most ANNOYING thing I've ever had to deal with. BUT THAT'S NOT ALL! The terrible wheel caused Chip's feet to BLEED! Sickening! At first we thought he was biting it but the vet explained to only use wheels with solid bottoms: NO MESH! Save your money! Buy this wheel instead!:Biddie Buddies Small Animal Blue Exercise Wheel with Stand for Mice Hamsters & Gerbils 3.5" Diameter Wheel x 6"H (with stand) Thanks and NOT A GOOD WHEEL!!! The other one's better and you can choose the color!

Not for all rodents, but okay for gerbilsApr 13, 2011

I could see this wheel being awful for rats - they need a bigger, enclosed, wheel and without a bar. A wodent wheel is perfect for rats. Also I could see a sturdy silent spinner type wheel being more appropriate for hamsters who tend to run more obsessively than gerbils. However, I've had good experience using this wheel for many pet gerbils over many years. They don't gnaw it up, like they do the plastic wheels and the tails dont' get caught like they can it the old style slated metal wheels. I use twisty ties to tie the wheel to the lid of a 10 or 20 gallon housing set up so the wheel is a few inches off the ground. I use vaseline or anything like that, e.g., chapstick in a pinch, so the wheel doesn't squeak.

I Gave This Wheel To My Two Gerbils And They LOVED It! I Got this Wheel But Just A Bigger Size!

I have to energetic gerbils that use this week from my dinnertime way into the night. It doesn't seem to matter what wheel I put in they still run like crazy on it, and often push eachother off or run in opposite directions on it! Anyways, it does squeak sometimes, but it doesn't bother me since it's not in my bedroom. The silent spinner I used before, but the poop accumulates on it terribly so that even when you wash it frequently, it's very hard to get the poop out of the nooks and crannies of the plastic. For this, all their poop goes through the wholes and you only have to clean it to get the pee off. So the cage smells better because of this. In my glass tank, it thumps greatly againts the bottom, and is only slightly better when tape it to the floor. But I'm not getting rid of it since there's nothing better that I know of (I used to hang my silent spinner upside down from the top of the cage so that it wouldn't thump against the floor, and it looked really cool, but it still didn't stop the poop accumulation problem.)
