I've had rats for 3 years and I have never seen one take to a toy like one of mine did to this.
The leader of the cage would play with this thing for hours and walk around as if it were some sort of status symbol; more often than not if he wasn't playing with it he would stash it in his food dish.
He never had a health issue from it and I never saw him stripping away the bark (pine isn't the greatest for rats). As with any toy, watch how it's treated but by all means try this out- your furry little ones will love it.
