Works Great...well worth the moneyJan 20, 2011
By Derek I bought a 30 gallon tank and 2 turtles from someone but they did not have a pump/filter with it. So needless to say, by the time I received this filter even with 2 day shipping, the tank was very dirty even with cleaning it manually. I installed this filter setup and within a few hours, the tank was perfectly clean. I am very happy/impressed with this purchase and it works perfectly, along with being cheaper than much of the competition. Also, the turtles seem to be quite fond on the little spray bar that comes with it.
Only negative that I have is that Amazon recommended a filter hanger and even though it says its for the 501 filter, I figured why would Amazon recommend it if it doesn't work with it. So needless to say I got the hanger and yeah, it does not fit. Not a big deal but just something to be aware of.

Great ProductApr 06, 2011

Let me start by saying that the product is very easy to set up. Although most of us do not like to read the manual, I would recommend reading the instructional manual very carefully. When I first received this product from Amazon, the product refused to work. I read the instructional manual three times and still had no luck. Two other people worked on it and the results were not positive. So I came to a conclusion that the product was defective and I was right. I contacted Amazon right away and asked for a replacement. The second canister filter was sent out immediately. I set up the canister filter exactly the way I set it up the first time by reading the manual. After everything is hooked up into place, the filter works like a charm. Within thirty minutes, the water in the tank started to clear up. Within hours, the residues at the bottom of the tank started to clear up. Even though I had a bad experience with the first product, I am very pleased with the canister filter. My two red-eyed sliders are extremely happy right now! They are more active than ever just based on their behavior.
Please remember the filter has to be placed the same level as the tank and NOT below the tank. If not, it might NOT work.

Zoo Med 511Apr 03, 2011
By Roberto J. Cruz After purchasing Filter after filter the 511 zoo med is the best by far. it's easy to clean and it is not noisy at all it's actually relaxing hearing the water flow. ;the only thing that was wrong is that not all the parts of the product where there and I cant get them any where. but besides that this is a great filter and my turtle can not be happier.

Fair product, but not greatJan 28, 2012

I bought this filter 7 months ago and was really happy with it at first. Being a new turtle owner, which I was, you quickly cycle through many sizes of tanks and filters because you don't understand completely how truly dirty they are and how much room they need. This was my 3rd bigger tank and filter in 3 months so I thought I was finally "there". I had a 55 gallon long aquarium by then which I kept about 1/3 of the way full for our red-eared slider.
This filter was really easy to get setup and going and it did help with the tank, but unfortunately, not enough. I went from cleaning it every week to about every 2-3 weeks which was great, but still kind of a pain. Then I had to add in an in-tank fluval to help with the rest that this one couldn't handle. Eventually, I learned from other turtle forums that the best setup is to feed the turtle in a separate feeding tank. I did this, and of course it helped tremendously. But the ZooMed 511 wasn't the reason the tank was staying cleaner. Frankly, I don't think it really did much at all.
As I said, I bought the filter 7 months ago and it "died" last week. The main reason for failure is the clasps on the side that hold it together to create the seal. They are a MAJOR pain to open and close. So hard to do either that I had to get my husband to help me every time. After the 2nd or 3rd cleaning, one popped off and we were able to attach it again so no problem. The next time, the whole piece broke off. I was able to get it back on and functioning so I figured it was ok. Last weekend, I couldn't even get the filter sealed at all and it leaked all over the floor. So, done. But, even if one of the side clasps hadn't broken, I wanted to add that the in-take and out-take plastic pieces were already worn out and cracking and the tubing wasn't fitting properly. I guess those pieces are just made cheaply but how can you replace?? So that wasn't really holding up either. Side-note to that, the "elbow" joints for this are awkward, tiny and REALLY hard to clean. The turtle poo/gunk really gets clogged up in there quickly so I think not a good design. I had to make some small brushes and use pipe cleaners to really get out all the goo because flow/performance was so bad.
I paid about $70 dollars for this and it lasted about 7 months. If this math works for you, you are probably okay. And, again, it is pretty easy to set up and clean. Some folks said on other reviews that it is big, but I didn't think so. Oh, and it is quiet, silent in fact. Anyway, once again, moving on up. Going to buy a more powerful, bigger canister filter now.
**note to new turtle owners, especially red-eared sliders - don't skimp starting out and save $$$ in the long run, buy BIGGER - tanks, filters. They are tiny at first but get HUGE quick. We've had ours about 10 months and he's already 4+inches across and 6+inches long and now in a 40 gallon "breeder tank" which is wider than the 55 long. But since you're only filling it up 1/2 to 1/3 they will be happier with more room to swim and turn around. Also I HIGHLY recommend setting up a separate feeding tank, such as a 10 gallon nearby. It's a pain to move them from tank to tank to feed but WELL worth the cleaning time/maintenance. It's a lot easier to clean a 10 gallon with nothing in it once a week than a 30+ tank filled with docks, filters and gravel etc. Happy turtle herding!!

It goes to the great beyond because it far exceeds my expectations. And the reasons are as follows:Sep 21, 2011
By R. Pérez I have been looking for a water pump for cleaning the water because without it you have to clean the water tank three times a day. I wanted to get a competitor's Deluxe Turtle set from Zilla but I prefer having the turtle outdoors so it could have the legit sun. So I didn't need the two lights for sunbasking and for uvb lights, since it was getting that from the original sun anyways, plus I already had a platform and the water tank, but the one they had was bigger. But just for only those two reasons it wasn't worth getting stuff that I already had. So I looked for the Zoo Med (which is the floating platform I've got from them) and saw they had some mixed reviews on the other models (311 I think it was) and wasn't convinced with the 3 star average product. And the other one they have the 501 looks stupid hanging on the water tank, but the 511 is on a different league.
The 511 model is at first sight a monster to behold, don't let the plastic fool you, it is quite strong. I managed to complete building this thing within a day, let me tell you, it is a journey to complete the thing, you have to hook up the cables and tighten the screws, and I got confused with the in and out with the mentality that IN goes inside the water pump, and OUT is for coming out of the water pump, well, no. It was the other way around, I think? I switched it back and forth about four times and got it running somehow. I even had to call them but they don't answer the phone after 5PM. So I pressed on, I have to do this, I have to save billybob from swimming along with his waste. Never. Again.
Within the instructions, Step 2, and 3 are simple, step 4 simply takes time. Pour water on the carbon bag (DONT OPEN IT), put in those tubes things, and put water on it with the water detergent. Here is where I wasted most of my time. I strongly recommend that Zoo Med highlights this part "Fill The canister COMPLETELY with dechlorinated water". I thought I had gotten a defective motor or something, I had it on expecting water to be pumped but no. After I filled it with water (you might have to wait for the water to stabilize inside the container) you close the pump with the seal and watch out it slowly starts working. At first it was a little bit of water, but give it some time to get rid of the excess air trapped inside and you will be surpriced at how powerful the water spray rate is, I only have one turtle and it is a complete overkill. It cleans the water so nice. It's an amazing product. It just takes some time to get there, but once your journey is over, the rewards are for the turtles everywhere as billybob swam towards the spray and hanged out there. I think that's going to be his new favorite spot. This thing cost a bit more than the 501 but it's definitively worth it. I understand that they were marketing it for people that have big tanks but even with my small tank, it can clean more water than billybob can poop so that is fine with me. I'm thinking of getting another turtle. Maybe it's time for billybob to have some friends.
The end.
