1I wasted my moneyOct 16, 2005
By PGolin
There is a flat-out lie on the side of this box. It reads, "Available in 3 sizes to easily accommodate any size aquatic turtle." I have two red ear sliders, probably the most common of all aquatic turtle pets, and they are large so I bought the largest size of this Turtle Dock. Forget my big turtle, who didn't even try to climb on this thing...The SMALLER of my two turtles sunk this; he probably weighs in at 3 or 4 pounds. He certainly doesn't look any larger than the turle they show on the box, yet when he climbs on it, the whole floating thing submerges so that half his body is under water. The same rods mechanism that allows it to float at any water level and keeps it connected to the side of the tank also lets the thing sink if your turtle is too heavy for it, which proves the other lie on the box, that it "Allows aquatic turtles a dry basking area..." I am very disappointed in this product and unless your turtles are under a pound in weight I don't think it works, despite their promise that is accommodates any size aquatic turtle. And because I tried it, now I can't return it to the Amazon Merchant. Thanks a lot, Zoo Med.

1What a pile of junk.May 21, 2006

If they think this dock will handle "any size aquatic turtle," they must have only handled turtles that live until about three, then die of poor owner care. On upgrading my tank and wanting to get something commercially available so as to move my turtle into a larger (70 gallon long) environment ASAP, I was assured by my "friendly local pet-store worker" that this would support my ten-year-old 8-inch-long shell RES. Technically, it is, in fact, easily large enough to support her, but the very weak suction cups, combined with the poor floatation properties (it's basically made to handle its own weight and not much more), make this a poor choice. The fact that it "adjusts to any water height" is useless - if you're a turtle owner, you should be taking enough care of your pets on a constant basis to maintain water height as necessary. Maybe if this system was strong enough to not horribly dip on the unsupported side when my turtle is on it (popping at least one suction cup off every time), leaving her with a partially submerged shell and a hind leg out to keep her back-left side even with the rest of the body, it would be an alright idea, but as it is, it cripples the entire design. It would be better to make something yourself - the quality would be infinitely better. Since I spent forty-plus non-refundable Canadian dollars on this, I'm going to keep it, replacing the suction cups with far stronger ones (the only product I've seen with even worse suction cups are Guardian heaters) and using thick cross-section dowels underneath, also strongly suctioned to the aquarium wall to keep the entire system rigid and supportive on all sides - which is what the lamebrains at ZooMed should have done in the first place.

All in all, either find something better, or, even better than that, create something yourself. Although this is one of the better LOOKING docks out there (although I needed to use floating plants to hide the rails' above-water ugliness), it's only made to, say, hold a mass number of juvenile turtles, and no more. A company which supposedly deals explicitly with reptiles, and which clearly states on the box that it will accomodate "any size aquatic turtle" without even bothering to list a maximum weight rating, should know better than to consider this the "largest" type support for the most common type of aquatic turtle kept as a pet. Although, in hindsight, should any more be expected from such a supposed "specialist" company which creates a so-called special "turtle filter" which can only do tanks up to 30 gallons? For reference, my 70 gallon tank, which probably has about 50 gallons of water in it, has two modified Emperor 400 filters running, each circulating 400gph and individually rated up to cleaning 80 gallon aquariums - and that isn't overdoing it in the slightest. It just shows this company makes products for the kind of people who only want a pet when it's small and cute, and not for following through the necessities for the complete life cycle of an animal.

1sink or swimJun 28, 2006

I too had the opportunity to purchase this "lovely" dock. First let me state that it sunk as soon as my turtles climbed upon it. The suction cups did not hold and the next morning I found it floating upside down with my turtles taking a ride around the tank. Also, within a week I kept finding chunks of "stuff" floating in the tank and blocking the filters. The "stuff" I discovered was pieces of the floating dock. For some reason my turtles feel it is a food item and continue to peck at it. Save your money and your sanity buy something else or make your own dry area.

1BEWARE. Sharp metal spikes inside the docks!Jan 18, 2007
By Vamppire
Firstly, this product is useless as is - the dock will not stay above water. You must silicone it to your tank for it to remain stable.

That being said, it is inappropriate for this usage as well. It is made of styrofoam which a turtle with claws will rip apart (and will eat the pieces.) My adult RES broke off the entire corner of the dock and there was a LARGE METAL SPIKE PROTRUDING pointing in the exact direction the turle climbs from. I suppose this is the inner armature - it is not a blunt-edge metal wire, which would be dangerous enough, but a thick VERY SHARP spike. I actually broke skin by touching it while trying to photograph it (sending a letter to the company.)

I consider myself very lucky that my turtle did not impale himself. Stay away from this product. If you would like a ramp, I suggest getting a piece of cork bark and siliconing it to your tank.
